Long Beach To Van Nuys Airport · Straight Up The I-405
Flight Lessons For Long Beach Residents
Long Beach has deep aviation roots and its own busy airport, yet many residents still drive north to train with Essence Flight School at Van Nuys Airport. The reason is simple: 20 school-owned aircraft, an FAA-approved full-motion simulator, lessons from 9 AM to 9 PM daily and one school for every rating.
Essence Flight School is at Van Nuys Airport in the San Fernando Valley, about 42 miles by road from downtown Long Beach. That is a real drive, and we will not pretend otherwise. Students from Long Beach who choose us make a deliberate trade: a longer commute in exchange for a school-owned fleet of 20 aircraft, two simulators including the full-motion Redbird MCX, instructors on the schedule seven days a week and a single path from day one to professional certificates.
The good news is that the drive is predictable. It is nearly all one freeway, and pilots learn fastest when lessons are regular, not when the airport is closest. If you can fly two or three times a week at quiet times, the commute becomes routine. This page explains how Long Beach students make that work.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Every airplane you fly here belongs to Essence Flight School: all 20 of them, maintained in-house rather than borrowed from outside owners. That matters more when you drive 42 miles to a lesson, because a school-owned, in-house-maintained fleet is much less likely to cancel on you. The fleet includes the light-sport Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20, the Piper Warrior, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the Piper Seminole twin, with cockpits set up consistently so each step up feels familiar.

A City That Built Airplanes
Long Beach has one of the richest aviation histories in Southern California. Douglas Aircraft built airliners and military transports beside Long Beach Airport for decades, and the plant later produced the C-17 Globemaster III for Boeing until the program ended in 2015. Many families here have a parent or grandparent who worked on an assembly line, in engineering or in flight test, and we often meet students who grew up hearing those stories.
That heritage shows up in who calls us. We hear from aerospace and engineering professionals in the area, port and logistics workers with irregular shifts, students at Cal State Long Beach, and retirees who finally have time for something they always meant to do. Each group needs something different from a schedule, which is why we fly every day from morning until 9 PM.

Courses Offered
Every Course, One Fixed Price
Every program Long Beach students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
From $229
About 60 minutes (90 and 120 minutes available)
Pair it with a free consultation so one trip from Long Beach answers both questions: do you love flying, and does the drive work? You fly most of the hour yourself with an instructor beside you.
Teen Flight Training (Ages 10–15)
From $4,200
Most teens finish over 4–8 months
Weekend-friendly for Long Beach families, with ten flight hours, three simulator hours and the same instructor every time. Saturday lessons make the drive easy and the all-in price makes budgeting simple.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Built around 25 flight hours plus 3 simulator hours
The lowest-cost certificate we teach, with fewer required hours than the private. For Long Beach residents who want recreational flying, fewer total hours also means fewer trips up the 405.
Private Pilot License
From $10,400 (Comprehensive $15,400, Premium $22,000)
Two to four months for most students
The foundation for every later rating. Long Beach students often train in a concentrated block of a few weeks to finish faster, then keep flying by renting the same airplanes after the checkride.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
About 6–8 weeks
Coastal low clouds are part of life near the harbor. Up to 20 hours of this rating can be flown in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX, which lets you pair simulator and airplane sessions on each visit.
Commercial Pilot License
$15,400 package ($15,900 list)
A few months if you already hold private and instrument
The professional certificate for anyone in Long Beach aiming at paid flying. The package includes complex time in our Piper Arrow and 20 hours in the full-motion simulator, all at one airport and one school.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated, about one week
A single focused week flying the Piper Seminole twin. For a Long Beach pilot, that means a short stretch of commuting instead of months of it, at a fixed all-inclusive price.
Flight Instructor Program (CFI, CFII, MEI)
From $15,400
Four-week intensive course
All three instructor ratings in an intensive month. Long Beach students on a career track often treat it as a full-time commitment and plan the commute or temporary arrangements around it.
For licensed Long Beach pilots who want a fast airplane for trips around the state. The high-performance endorsement is flown in our own SR22 Turbo, which you can then rent.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
About 9 months, zero to professional certificates
A compressed, full-time route from zero to instructor certificates, then a guaranteed paid instructor job at $48,000 a year full time. The short timeline keeps the commute to a defined period.

Short-term financing is available, with plans from $2,500 down. Training in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo instead of a standard trainer is a +$300/hr upgrade.
From downtown Long Beach most drivers take the I-710 up to the I-405, or join the 405 directly from the airport area and east Long Beach. From there it is north through the Westside, over the Sepulveda Pass and into the Valley, then a short hop to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3. With no traffic, route planners put it at just under an hour. Weekday rush hours can add a great deal more, so check a live traffic app before you leave.
Fly When The Freeway Is Quiet
Weekend mornings and weekday evenings are the easiest windows. Because we fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, a Saturday flight plus a Tuesday evening flight is a common Long Beach rhythm.
Book Longer Blocks
Pair a flight lesson with a ground or simulator session on the same visit. One trip then covers two pieces of training, and the commute per hour of training drops.
Study At Home Between Visits
Knowledge-test preparation happens between lessons. Enrolled students also get free use of our Redbird TD2 desktop trainer at the school for flows and instrument scans before or after a flight.
Schedule Online Any Time
Aircraft and instructors are booked through our online scheduling system at any hour, so you can plan the week around traffic and shifts.
Your First Flight
What You See On A Discovery Flight From Van Nuys
To set expectations honestly: the standard discovery flight route does not fly over Long Beach. It starts at Van Nuys, crosses toward the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, then turns west to Marina del Rey and the Santa Monica Pier, staying clear of LAX airspace to the south. Long Beach sits well beyond that boundary, but on a clear day the view south across the basin is wide. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly most of the time between. Flights start at $229 for one, $299 for two and $499 for the Luxury Cirrus or Multi-Engine Seminole flights.

Training Near Long Beach Airport Versus Training At Van Nuys
Long Beach Airport has a control tower, airline service and active general aviation, and Torrance and Compton airports are close by too. There is nothing wrong with learning near home. What Van Nuys adds is a specific combination: a towered airport with two parallel runways of 8,000 and 4,000 feet, constant business-jet and training traffic, and Burbank's Class C airspace right next door. You learn to talk with controllers and fit into a busy pattern from your first flight.
For Long Beach students already used to the rhythm of LGB, that environment feels natural rather than intimidating. For those aiming at a professional career, it is useful preparation for the airspace they will fly in for the rest of their working lives.

Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
Two Simulators, One Fewer Wasted Trip
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is built into every course at Essence Flight School. It banks and pitches like the airplane, so you can rehearse procedures before you fly them and work through problems between lessons. For Long Beach students it has a practical bonus: if weather cancels the flight after you have made the drive, a simulator session often keeps the visit productive.
Practice procedures before you fly them

The MCX's FAA Letter of Authorization credits up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward the commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward the private pilot certificate. See it at your consultation, or try a one-hour simulator discovery session for $189.

Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.

Accelerated Training Fits A Long Commute
Some Long Beach students decide the best way to handle the distance is to compress the training. Instead of stretching a private certificate over a year of weekend lessons, they block out a few weeks, fly almost daily and finish faster. Most of our private pilot students finish in two to four months, and accelerated students can move faster than that depending on weather, availability and how quickly they progress.
The same logic applies higher up the ladder. The Multi-Engine Rating is an accelerated course of about a week, the Flight Instructor Program runs as a four-week intensive, and the Airline Pilot Program takes about nine months of full-time training. Fewer total months of commuting is a real advantage when your home is 42 miles away.

Many people who search for a flying club near Long Beach are really asking how to get into an airplane for less. A flying club is a group of pilots who share aircraft, usually through an initiation fee, monthly dues and an hourly rate. Clubs suit pilots who already hold a certificate and want lower-cost access to an airplane. Instruction, when offered, often comes from member or independent instructors.
A flight school exists to train pilots. At Essence Flight School you follow a structured syllabus with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, in a fleet scheduled for students, with simulators on site. If you have never flown, or you want a new rating such as an instrument rating or a commercial certificate, a school gives you the clearer path. If you are already licensed and simply want to fly, renting from us is another option.
The Career Path From Long Beach To The Flight Deck
For Long Beach residents set on a flying career, our Airline Pilot Program takes you from zero experience through Private Pilot, Instrument, Commercial single and multi-engine, and all three instructor ratings in about nine months. The price is a fixed $84,000, with financing available.
Graduates are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at Essence Flight School, $48,000 a year full time, where they build the hours airlines require. Many Long Beach graduates find the drive matters less at that stage, because they are at the airport most of the day.
Already licensed, or about to be? Rent the same airplanes you train in. Rental begins at $179 an hour, fuel included, once you have flown a checkout with one of our instructors. Full details and rates are on our aircraft rental page.
