What Will You Spend? It Depends On Your Goal

Choose the goal closest to yours.

Your Likely Budget: $8,400 To $22,000

The Sport Pilot License at $8,400 is the lowest-cost way to fly for fun. If you want to carry more passengers, fly at night without extra hurdles or keep training later, a Private Pilot package at $10,400, $15,400 or $22,000 is the usual choice. Add the knowledge test, the checkride fee, your medical and a headset.

Your Likely Budget: $84,000

The Airline Pilot Program takes you from zero through private, instrument, multi-engine, commercial and flight instructor certificates in about nine months, for a fixed $84,000. Graduates are guaranteed a paid instructor position here, so most of the hours toward 1,500 are paid hours.

Your Likely Budget: One Rating At A Time

Add the Instrument Rating for $11,700, the Multi-Engine Rating for $5,100 or the Commercial Pilot course for $15,400. Or rent the same airplanes you trained in from $179 an hour at the package rate, fuel included, after a checkout.

Your Likely Budget: From $249

Lesson One costs $249 in the Redbird MCX simulator or $349 in a Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior, and runs two hours with an instructor. If you enroll within 24 hours, 100% of the cost is credited toward your training, so starting costs nothing extra if you go on.

Private Pilot License Price: Three Fixed Packages

A Private Pilot License costs $10,400, $15,400 or $22,000 at Essence Flight School. All three are one fixed price that covers the airplane, the FAA-approved Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, dual instruction and ground school. That price is the PPL cost you budget for. Nothing is billed by the hour on top of it.

PackagePriceTime In The AirplaneBest For
Standard$10,40038 hrs, plus 2 hrs in the simulatorStudents who can fly often and want to finish close to the FAA minimum
Comprehensive$15,40055 hrs, plus 5 hrs in the simulatorStudents who want extra flight and ground time built in. This is our most popular package
Premium$22,00070 hrsThe most flight time before your checkride

Why Most Students Fly More Than 40 Hours

The FAA requires at least 40 hours of flight time for a private pilot certificate (14 CFR 61.109). Nationally, most students log 60 to 75 hours before their checkride, and those extra hours can add $3,000 to $6,000 to an hourly bill. The biggest factor is how often you fly. A student who flies two or three times a week forgets less between lessons and finishes sooner.

The Standard package is built around the minimum; Comprehensive and Premium build extra time into the price.

Private Pilot License Cost Vs Sport Pilot Cost

The Sport Pilot License costs $8,400, which makes it the lowest-cost way into the left seat. Its FAA minimum is 20 hours (14 CFR 61.313). A Standard Private Pilot course costs $10,400 and has a 40-hour minimum. If you start with sport, an advisor can show you how that training applies when you add a private certificate later.

Pilot Course Price For Every Rating After Your First

Each rating after your first certificate has its own fixed price, so you can pay for one step at a time.

Instrument Rating — $11,700

The instrument rating lets you fly in clouds and low visibility under IFR. Most schools charge $10,000 to $13,000 for it. Our course is a fixed $11,700 and includes 20 hours in the full-motion simulator, the largest simulator allotment of any single rating we teach.

Commercial Pilot — $15,400

If you hold a private certificate and an instrument rating, the Commercial Pilot course costs $15,400 (list $15,900). Nationally this stage commonly runs $20,000 to $30,000. The FAA requires 250 hours of flight time for the commercial certificate.

Multi-Engine, Flight Instructor And Airline Pilot Program

  • The Multi-Engine Rating is $5,100 and is flown in our Piper Seminole twin.
  • The Flight Instructor course (CFI, CFII and MEI) is $15,400.
  • Starting from zero, the Airline Pilot Program costs $84,000. In about 9 months it takes you through the private, instrument, multi-engine, commercial and flight instructor certificates, and it includes a guaranteed instructor job so you can build hours toward the airlines.

Cessna 172 Rental Cost Per Hour: The Honest Answer

Many people price flight training by searching for the Cessna 172 rental cost per hour, because the 172 is the classic four-seat trainer. We don't fly a Cessna 172, so we won't quote you a number for one.

Our closest equivalent is the Piper Warrior, also a four-seat, single-engine trainer. It rents for $179 an hour at the package rate or $269 an hour standard, with fuel included in both. If you want the lowest hourly cost, the two-seat Cessna 162 Skycatcher is the same price.

When you compare quotes from other schools, check whether the rate is wet (fuel included) or dry (fuel extra). A dry rate can look cheaper until you add fuel.

Rent The Same Airplanes You Train In

Once you're certificated, you can rent the same airplanes you trained in, after a checkout with one of our instructors. You already know the airplanes, so you skip the learning curve that comes with a new rental fleet. Our aircraft rental guide covers what you need before you rent: a pilot certificate, a current medical or BasicMed, a flight review within 24 calendar months and a checkout flight. The Arrow, the Cirrus and the Seminole each also need their matching endorsement or rating.

What Lesson One Costs

Lesson One is the first lesson of your private pilot training: two hours with an FAA-certified instructor, with ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief. The price is all-in and paid at booking.

  • Cessna 162 Or Piper Warrior $349
  • Piper Warrior With A Guest $449
  • Diamond DA20 $549
  • Cirrus SR22 Turbo $749
  • Redbird MCX Simulator $249

If you enroll within 24 hours, 100% of the cost is credited toward your training. See every aircraft on the private pilot lessons page, or book Lesson One.

How The Redbird MCX Lowers Your Cost

Redbird Mcx Full-Motion Flight Simulator At Essence Flight School Van Nuys

Every course includes time in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, which banks and pitches like the real airplane. Here is what that saves on an hour of dual instruction at our published rates:

Where You Fly The HourDevice Or AircraftInstructorTotal
Redbird MCX simulator (package rate)$120From $110$230
Single-engine trainer (package rate)$179From $110$289

That's $59 saved on every hour you move into the simulator, so 10 hours saves about $590. That's before counting the time you don't spend taxiing, doing run-ups or waiting out the weather. Time in the MCX is loggable within FAA limits, so it still counts toward your certificate. See how simulator time counts.

Simulator Time Is In Every Course

Built In, FAA-Approved And Loggable

You never buy simulator time separately in a course. The Redbird MCX is built into every program, so you practice procedures before you fly them and keep them sharp between flights, at a lower hourly cost than the airplane.

And those hours are not just practice. The MCX is FAA-approved, so time with an authorized instructor is loggable within FAA limits, including up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating under its Letter of Authorization. See it at a free consultation.

How To Lower Your Flight School Cost

  1. Fly consistently. Two or three lessons a week means less relearning and fewer total hours.
  2. Use the simulator. Practice procedures in the Redbird MCX at $120 an hour instead of $179 or more in the airplane.
  3. Study on the ground. Learn theory in ground school and in the Essence app, not at airplane rates in the air.
  4. Choose a fixed price. An all-in course price beats a low "teaser" hourly rate that grows with every extra hour.
  5. Combine funding. Pair a payment plan with flight training scholarships or financing.

Flight School Cost FAQs

How Much Does Flight School Cost In Total?

At Essence Flight School, a Private Pilot License costs $10,400 to $22,000, a Sport Pilot License costs $8,400 and the complete zero-to-airline program costs $84,000. Each is one fixed course price that covers aircraft time, simulator time, instruction and ground school. FAA test fees, the medical and a headset are paid separately.

How Much Is A Private Pilot License?

The Standard package costs $10,400 and includes 38 hours in the airplane and 2 in the full-motion simulator. The Comprehensive package costs $15,400 and the Premium package costs $22,000. The FAA minimum is 40 hours of flight time (14 CFR 61.109).

Is It Cheaper To Pay By The Hour Or Buy A Package?

A package gives you one fixed price, so you know the total before you start. Paying by the hour starts at $179 for the Cessna 162 Skycatcher or Piper Warrior, plus instruction from $110. Hourly suits pilots who fly occasionally or only need to finish a few requirements.

How Much Does It Cost To Rent A Cessna 172 Per Hour?

We don't fly a Cessna 172. Our four-seat Piper Warrior rents for $179 an hour at the package rate or $269 an hour standard, and both rates include fuel. Once you're certificated, you rent the same airplanes you trained in, after a checkout.

How Much Does Lesson One Cost?

Lesson One costs $349 in a Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior, $449 with a guest in the Warrior, $549 in the Diamond DA20, $749 in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo or $249 in the Redbird MCX simulator. It is a two-hour lesson, and you fly the airplane yourself. If you enroll within 24 hours, 100% of the cost is credited toward your training.

Can I Finance Flight School?

Yes. You can pay the school directly in up to 12 monthly payments with no interest and no credit check, or finance over a longer term through a lender. Most courses start with $2,500 down.

What Costs Are Not Included In The Course Price?

The FAA medical certificate, the FAA knowledge test, the examiner's checkride fee and your own headset. At a free consultation we itemize them and give you a written estimate.

How Much Does It Cost To Become A Commercial Pilot?

From zero, the Airline Pilot Program costs $84,000 and covers every certificate through flight instructor, plus a guaranteed instructor job. If you already hold a private certificate and an instrument rating, the Commercial Pilot course costs $15,400.

Is Simulator Time Extra At Essence Flight School?

Not in a course. Every course price includes time in the FAA-approved Redbird MCX, from 2 hours in the Standard private pilot package to 50 in the Airline Pilot Program. By the hour, the MCX is $120 at the package rate or $200 standard.

Do You Offer A Lowest Price Guarantee?

Yes. Essence Flight School offers a lowest price guarantee. Ask an advisor at a free consultation how it applies to your training.
