IFR And VFR: What The Difference Actually Means

Every flight in the United States operates under one of two sets of rules. Which one you are using decides what weather you may legally fly in, who is responsible for keeping you away from other aircraft, and whether you need a clearance to go anywhere.

Visual Flight Rules (VFR) mean you navigate by looking outside, and you are responsible for seeing and avoiding other traffic. To fly VFR the weather must be good enough to see — specific visibility distances and specific distances from cloud, which change depending on the airspace you are in and how high you are.

Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) mean you fly by reference to the instruments, on a clearance, with air traffic control providing separation from other aircraft. You can fly through cloud. You can depart an airport where the cloud base is a few hundred feet. The weather stops being the thing that decides whether you go.

You will also see MVFR on weather reports — marginal visual conditions. Legal for VFR, but with a reduced margin. Marginal conditions are where a great many general aviation accidents happen, because the weather is just good enough to tempt a pilot who is not instrument rated.

Why The Rating Matters More In Los Angeles Than Most Places

Southern California has a particular weather pattern that makes this concrete rather than theoretical: the marine layer.

Through late spring and early summer, a shallow deck of coastal cloud pushes inland overnight and burns off during the morning. It is often only a few hundred to a couple of thousand feet thick, with clear sky above. A VFR pilot looks out of the window, sees grey, and does not fly. An instrument-rated pilot files, climbs through it in a couple of minutes, and is in sunshine for the rest of the flight.

That is the honest case for the rating here. Not emergencies — availability. It is the difference between a licence you use when conditions allow and a licence you use when you planned to. Van Nuys sits far enough inland that the layer often clears here first, which makes it a practical base for building real instrument time during the season.

INSTRUMENT RATING COURSE REQUIREMENTS

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED

022 Min Read

Instrument Rating Requirements

The list above covers what you need to enrol. The FAA separately sets the aeronautical experience you must hold before the checkride:

  • 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, of which at least 10 must be in an aeroplane
  • 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including at least 15 hours of instruction from an authorised instructor
  • A qualifying instrument cross-country flight of at least 250 nautical miles along airways or as directed by ATC, with an instrument approach at each airport and three different kinds of approach flown
  • The written knowledge test, passed before the practical
  • English proficiency and a current medical certificate

The cross-country requirement is the one that surprises people. Fifty hours of pilot-in-command cross-country flying is a significant amount of time, and many newly licensed private pilots do not have it yet. Building that time is worth planning for before you start, rather than discovering it halfway through. We will look at your logbook before you enrol and tell you plainly where you stand.

Where The Simulator Changes The Arithmetic

A portion of the required instrument time can be logged in an approved training device rather than an aircraft. Our Redbird MCX is FAA approved, and at $189 an hour against aircraft rates it makes a real difference to what the rating costs — while being a better place to learn approaches, because the instructor can freeze, reposition and repeat a procedure until it is solid.

Instrument Rating: Questions We Get Asked

How Long Does An Instrument Rating Take?

Three to four months flying two or three times a week, assuming you already hold the 50 hours of cross-country pilot-in-command time. If you do not, building that time comes first.

Do I Need An Instrument Rating To Be A Commercial Pilot?

You can hold a commercial certificate without one, but it is severely limited — and every airline route requires it. In practice the instrument rating sits between private and commercial for anyone flying professionally.

Can I Log Simulator Time Toward The Instrument Rating?

Yes, within the limits the FAA sets for approved training devices. Our Redbird MCX qualifies, and simulator hours are included in the course rather than charged as an extra.

What Is Actual Instrument Time?

Time flown solely by reference to instruments in real conditions — genuinely inside cloud. Simulated instrument time is flown in clear air wearing a view-limiting device. Both count toward the rating, and Los Angeles gives reliable access to the real thing during marine layer season.

Instrument Rating Requirements At A Glance

The FAA sets the instrument rating requirements for airplanes in 14 CFR 61.65. The section above covers the experience you log; the table below puts every requirement in one place, with the paragraph of the regulation it comes from, so you can check your own logbook against it.

RequirementWhat The FAA Asks For14 CFR

Cross-Country Time50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command, of which 10 hours must be in airplanes61.65(d)(1)
Instrument Time40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, of which 15 hours must come from an authorized instructor with an instrument-airplane rating (a CFII)61.65(d)(2)
Recent Airplane Training3 hours of instrument flight training in an airplane from an authorized instructor within 2 calendar months before the practical test61.65(d)(2)(i)
IFR Cross-CountryOne cross-country flight with an instructor, under IFR on a filed flight plan: 250 nautical miles along airways or ATC-directed routing, an instrument approach at each airport, and three different kinds of approaches61.65(d)(2)(ii)
Practical TestAn instructor endorsement, then an oral exam and flight test to the Instrument Rating – Airplane ACS61.65(a)(6), (a)(8)

The IFR rating requirements above are the same rule under a different name: "IFR rating" and "instrument rating" mean the same FAA rating. For what IFR and VFR flight actually are, see the IFR And VFR section near the top of this page.

Instrument Rating Prerequisites Checklist

Before your first instrument lesson, it helps to know exactly where you stand. These are the instrument rating prerequisites we check with every applicant at enrollment:

  • A Private Pilot Certificate. You need at least a private pilot certificate with an airplane rating. If you are not there yet, our private pilot course at Van Nuys comes first. The FAA also allows a combined private pilot and instrument application, in which up to 45 hours of cross-country time flown performing the duties of pilot in command with an instructor may count toward the 50 hours (14 CFR 61.65(g)).
  • A Current Medical Certificate. A medical is not listed in 61.65 itself, but you need one to act as pilot in command on training flights, and our course requirements list an FAA third-class medical. Our guide to getting your FAA medical certificate at Van Nuys explains the exam.
  • U.S. Citizenship Or TSA Approval. Non-U.S. citizens complete the TSA flight training process before training begins.
  • English Proficiency. Required by the FAA for every pilot certificate and rating.
  • Your Logbook Totals. Add up your cross-country pilot in command time, your total instrument time (simulated instrument time from your private pilot training counts), and any time you logged with an instrument instructor. We review this with you and tell you plainly how many hours you still need.
  • A Plan For The Knowledge Test. Ground school prepares you for the FAA written test, and your instructor endorses you when you are ready. Our page on taking the FAA knowledge test in Los Angeles covers booking and test day.

If the cross-country number is the gap, it is worth planning that time before you start instrument lessons. Flights to real destinations in the Piper Warrior build pilot in command cross-country time and make the instrument training that follows more useful.

How Many Hours For An Instrument Rating?

The FAA does not set a total flight time minimum for an instrument rating. Instead it sets two numbers that matter: 40 hours of instrument time and 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command. Here is how those minimums compare with what our Instrument Rating course includes.

ItemFAA Minimum (14 CFR 61.65)Essence Instrument Rating Course
Instrument Time40 hours, actual or simulated40 hours of dual instruction, aircraft and simulatorUp to 10 of the simulator hours are currently published as creditable toward the 40; we confirm against the MCX Letter of Authorization at enrollment.
Instruction From A CFII15 of the 40 hours40 hours of dual instruction; at least 15 from a CFII, as the FAA requires
Airplane Time3 hours within 2 calendar months of the checkride, plus the 250 nm IFR cross-country20 hours of single-engine flight time
Simulator TimeCreditable within the limits in 61.65(h)–(j) and the device's FAA authorization20 hours in the FAA-approved full-motion Redbird MCX
Ground TrainingGround training or a home-study course on the knowledge areas10 hours of ground school and pre- and post-flight briefing
Cross-Country As Pilot In Command50 hours, 10 of them in airplanesLogged before or alongside the course; we review your logbook at enrollment

So how many hours for an instrument rating will you actually fly? For a pilot who already has the 50 hours of cross-country time, the course hours above are the plan. For a newer private pilot, the cross-country time usually adds more hours than the instrument training itself. Flying two or three times a week keeps skills from fading between lessons, which is the most reliable way to finish close to the planned hours.

Instrument Rating Cost

Our Instrument Rating course is a complete package at a published price of $11,700. It is built around the minimums above, with the simulator used where it saves money and teaches better, and the airplane used where the rule and real-world skill require it.

What Sits Outside The Package

We itemize the costs that are not part of any course price: the FAA medical, the examiner fee for the checkride, books, charts and a headset. Hours beyond the package, if you need them, are billed at the rates on our current rate sheet. Most of the variation in what an instrument rating costs comes from two things: how much cross-country pilot in command time you still need, and how often you fly.

Choosing Your Airplane

The course is priced in single-engine trainers such as the IFR-equipped Piper Warrior ($179 an hour at the package rate). Pilots who want to learn instrument flying behind a full glass panel can also train in our Cirrus SR22 Turbo, with Garmin Perspective avionics and the CAPS airframe parachute, at its own rate of $449 an hour. Ask us to price that option before you enroll.

For every course price side by side, see how much flight school costs at Essence Flight School, and for payment plans and lenders, our page on flight school loans and financing.

Train In Our Two FAA-Approved Simulators

Instrument flying is a procedural skill, and a simulator is an efficient place to learn procedures. Essence Flight School has two FAA-approved Redbird simulators at Van Nuys, both covered in the simulator section above:

What The Simulator Hours Count Toward

Under 14 CFR 61.65(i), up to 20 hours of instrument time in an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device (or up to 10 hours in a basic device) may be credited toward the 40 hours, but only when an authorized instructor provides the time and the FAA approved the instrument tasks performed in that device. Paragraph (j) caps all simulator and training-device time at 20 hours combined for training outside part 142. Within those limits, each device's FAA Letter of Authorization sets what it can be used for.

Our published credit for the MCX toward the instrument rating is up to 10 hours, as shown in the simulator section above. Before you start, we confirm against the MCX's current Letter of Authorization exactly how your simulator hours will be logged. Practice on your own, including TD2 sessions, sharpens your scan but does not count toward the minimums unless an instructor gives the training.

Why It Works Better Than The Airplane For Some Lessons

In the MCX your instructor can freeze the simulator in the middle of an approach, reposition you to the final approach fix, fail an instrument, or add low clouds and wind, then replay what happened. The whole lesson goes to approaches instead of taxiing, run-ups and the climb out. The practical test itself is flown in an airplane (61.65(a)(8) allows only an aircraft, a full flight simulator or a flight training device), so every procedure you learn in the MCX is flown again in the airplane before your checkride.

See our flight simulators at Van Nuys for full specifications, and after your rating, read IFR current vs. proficient on how instrument pilots use the simulator to stay sharp.

IFR ACS: What The Checkride Covers

Your instrument checkride is graded against the FAA Instrument Rating – Airplane Airman Certification Standards (FAA-S-ACS-8C, effective May 31, 2024). The IFR ACS lists the knowledge, risk management and skill elements for every task, and the examiner uses it for both the oral exam and the flight. The eight areas of operation match the flight proficiency list in 14 CFR 61.65(c):

Area Of OperationTasks
I. Preflight PreparationPilot Qualifications; Weather Information; Cross-Country Flight Planning
II. Preflight ProceduresAircraft Systems Related to IFR Operations; Aircraft Flight Instruments and Navigation Equipment; Instrument Flight Deck Check
III. ATC Clearances And ProceduresCompliance with Air Traffic Control Clearances; Holding Procedures
IV. Flight By Reference To InstrumentsInstrument Flight; Recovery from Unusual Flight Attitudes
V. Navigation SystemsIntercepting and Tracking Navigational Systems and DME Arcs; Departure, En Route, and Arrival Operations
VI. Instrument Approach ProceduresNon-precision Approach; Precision Approach; Missed Approach; Circling Approach; Landing from an Instrument Approach
VII. Emergency OperationsLoss of Communications; Approach with Loss of Primary Flight Instrument IndicatorsTwo one-engine-inoperative tasks apply only to multi-engine applicants.
VIII. Postflight ProceduresChecking Instruments and Equipment

How The Day Goes

  1. Paperwork And Endorsements. The examiner checks your knowledge test report, your logbook against 61.65 and your instructor's endorsement.
  2. The Oral Exam. Usually built around a cross-country flight you planned: weather, the route and procedures, aircraft systems and equipment, and the decisions you would make if things change.
  3. The Flight. Expect a departure, holding, approaches including a precision and a non-precision approach, a missed approach, and flight with a loss of primary flight instrument indicators, flown within the tolerances the ACS sets for each task.

Essence Flight School has two on-staff Designated Pilot Examiners, and our instructors train to the ACS from the first lesson, so the checkride tests what you have already practiced. Our students hold a 98% first-time checkride pass rate. After the rating, pilots on a professional path usually continue to commercial pilot license training at Van Nuys.

Instrument Rating FAQs

How Many Hours Do You Need For An Instrument Rating?

The FAA requires 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including 15 hours from an instrument instructor, and 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command, 10 of them in airplanes. Our course includes 40 hours of dual instruction (20 in the airplane and 20 in the full-motion simulator) plus 10 hours of ground training. Up to 10 of those simulator hours are currently published as creditable toward the FAA’s 40; we confirm the exact credit against the MCX Letter of Authorization when you enroll and count any instrument time already in your logbook.

What Are The Prerequisites For An Instrument Rating?

At least a private pilot certificate with an airplane rating (or a combined private and instrument application), English proficiency, and ground training with an instructor endorsement for the knowledge test. To enroll in our course you also need an FAA third-class medical, and non-U.S. citizens need TSA approval.

How Much Does An Instrument Rating Cost?

Our complete Instrument Rating course is $11,700, with a $2,500 down payment and four monthly payments of $2,300. The FAA medical, the examiner fee, books, charts and a headset are separate, and extra hours, if you need them, are billed at the rate sheet.

Can I Use A Simulator For Instrument Training?

Yes. The FAA allows instrument time from an authorized instructor in an approved training device to count toward the 40 hours, up to 20 hours in an advanced aviation training device. Our published credit for the Redbird MCX toward the instrument rating is up to 10 hours, and we confirm the logging against its Letter of Authorization when you enroll. The checkride itself is flown in the airplane.

Do I Need A CFII For All My Instrument Training?

No. At least 15 of the 40 instrument hours must be training from an authorized instrument instructor (a CFII), and the 3 hours of airplane training within 2 calendar months of the checkride and the IFR cross-country flight must be flown with one too. Simulator time counts only when an authorized instructor gives it. Other simulated instrument time can be logged as pilot in command under a view-limiting device with an appropriately rated safety pilot in the other seat (14 CFR 91.109(c)).

There are many flight schools at Van Nuys but Essence stands out. Their aircraft are newer than others which makes it both nicer and safer to fly. My favorite is their diamond aircraft. Most schools only have Cessnas and Pipers. They also have very flexible scheduling with their one on one instructions. Overall, I am very happy.

I recently had the chance to take my first-ever discovery flight, and it was nothing short of amazing! From the moment I stepped into the cockpit, the excitement hit me. I’d never been in such close proximity to the controls of an aircraft, and being able to actually feel how a plane moves in the air was surreal. I am extremely happy that I chose to go with Essence Flight school! I definitely recommend them!!!

Amazing flight school in van nuys airport. I have been a student here for the past few months and i could not be happier. I started doing a lot of research looking to different flight schools in Los Angeles area, I compared the aircraft and the flight simulators, they have really nice airplanes. Very nicely maintained and the loon and fly amazing.

The most interesting thing about this school is the full motion simulator they have, it cost a lot less to practice your maneuvers and landings, it is brand new and it's very realistic.

Overall the customer service is great and their prices are very fair.

Go see Soofia, she is awesome.

An Amazing Experience with Essence Flight Academy and CFI Joseph!!

Flying with them was such a memorable experience! From the moment I arrived, everything was smooth and professional. The CFI Joseph was fantastic—super knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and made the whole flight feel safe and fun.

Getting to fly the Diamond plane was the best part. It’s such a sleek, fun aircraft, and it handled like a dream. The views on the flight over LA, Hollywood, Malibu, the feel of the controls—everything was just awesome.

If you’ve ever thought about flying or just want to try something new and exciting, definitely check out Essence Flight Academy. Ask for Joseph—you won’t regret it!

If you are looking for an amazing birthday present for someone, or to truly impress your date, Essence Flight Academy does a fabulous intro flying lesson! My sister has always dreamed of learning to fly and she was thrilled! I was a very excited passenger who got to see amazing Los Angeles sites way closer than you would see in a commercial jet. Our instructor, Adam, explained everything with fabulous detail He let my sister take the controls 3/4 way through and she got to practice turning!! Truly a fabulous afternoon! Excellent choice for an impressive experience!! 😊👍👍
