Start Pilot Training

Your First Private Pilot Lesson, Not A Sightseeing Flight

If you already know you want a pilot certificate, the best first step is the lesson that begins it. Lesson one at Essence Flight School is taught the way the rest of your training will be: a short ground lesson with a clear objective, a preflight inspection you do together, real flying with you on the controls, and a debrief where your instructor writes up what you did and signs your logbook.

You choose the lesson: the Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior (we assign one by availability, and you can note a preference when you book), the Diamond DA20, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, the four-seat Warrior with a guest in the back, or our FAA-approved Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. Every option is two hours, and every option ends with a signed logbook entry.

The Two-Hour Plan

How Your 120 Minutes Are Spent

One booking, one instructor, one aircraft. The bar is drawn to scale.

  1. 1

    Ground Lesson · 30 Min

At the desk with your instructor: how a wing makes lift, what the yoke or stick, rudder pedals and throttle do, the six main instruments, the maneuvers you’ll fly today and the radio calls you’ll hear.

  2. 2

    Preflight · 10 Min

You do your own preflight at the airplane, with your instructor beside you: fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires and the documents on board. It’s the inspection you’ll do before every flight as a pilot.

  3. 3

    Flying · About 70 Min

Your instructor flies the takeoff and talks to the tower. Then the controls are yours: the climb over the San Fernando Valley, the first turns across the Santa Monica Mountains and the practice area off the Malibu coast. Your instructor flies the approach and landing back at Van Nuys.

  4. 4

    Debrief · 10 Min

Back on the ground: what went well, what to work on and the plan for lesson two. Your instructor signs your first logbook entry, logged as dual instruction toward your private pilot certificate.

Flight time can vary with weather, traffic and air traffic control. Please arrive 15 minutes early.

Airport And Practice Area

From Van Nuys Tower To The Malibu Coast

Lesson one starts at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), a towered airport with Class D airspace beneath the Burbank Class C. Your instructor flies the takeoff from one of its two parallel runways and talks to the tower, so you hear real clearances from your very first lesson.

  1. The Valley climb. You take the controls in the climb over the San Fernando Valley, holding the climb and a heading.
  2. Over the mountains. Your first turns, crossing the Santa Monica Mountains.
  3. The practice area. Off the Malibu coast your instructor flies clearing turns first, then the controls are yours for straight and level, climbs and descents, turns and trim.
  4. Back to Van Nuys. Your instructor flies the approach and the landing.

Which To Pick

Four Quick Ways To Decide

You Want The Lowest Cost Per Hour Later

Pick the Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior. They have our lowest rental rates, from $179/hr at package rates, so the airplane you start in is the one that keeps your course affordable.

You Want A Nimble, Responsive Trainer

Pick the Diamond DA20: center stick, bubble canopy and quick, light handling. It suits students who want to feel every input.

You’re Aiming For A Career Or A Cirrus

Pick the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. You start with a glass cockpit in the same airplane used for our Cirrus training.

You’re Nervous Or Want To Practice First

Pick the Redbird MCX. You can pause, repeat and fly in any weather, then take your skills to the airplane on lesson two.

FAQs

Private Pilot Lessons: Your Questions

What Happens In Lesson One?

Two hours at Van Nuys Airport with an FAA-certificated instructor: 30 minutes of ground school, 10 minutes for your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a 10-minute debrief. Your instructor flies the takeoff and landing; you are on the controls for the Valley climb, the turns over the Santa Monica Mountains and the practice area off the Malibu coast. The flight is logged as dual instruction.

Do I Need Any Experience Before Lesson One?

No. You don’t need a license, a medical certificate or any flying experience for a lesson with an instructor. Your instructor is the pilot in command and sits beside you with an identical set of controls.

Does Lesson One Count Toward A Private Pilot License?

Yes. Training from an authorized instructor is loggable under 14 CFR 61.51(h), and it counts toward the 20 hours of instruction that 14 CFR 61.109 requires for a private pilot certificate. Under 14 CFR 61.109(k), up to 2.5 hours of training in an approved simulator or training device, given by an authorized instructor, can be credited toward the flight training the private pilot certificate requires; the Redbird MCX is approved through its FAA Letter of Authorization.

Which Aircraft Should I Choose For My First Lesson?

For the $349 lesson we assign the Cessna 162 or Piper Warrior by availability; note a preference when you book. The Cessna 162 and Piper Warrior carry our lowest hourly rates, the Diamond DA20 has a center stick and a bubble canopy, and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo has a glass cockpit and a parachute for the whole airplane. If you’re unsure, start in the Redbird MCX simulator or book a free consultation.

Can Someone Come With Me?

Yes, in the four-seat Piper Warrior only, for $100 more ($449). Your guest rides in the back seat and watches. No children under 5, and guests under 18 come with a parent or guardian. The Cessna 162 and Diamond DA20 seat two, so they have no guest option.

What Is The Weight Limit?

Each aircraft has a certificated weight limit that we cannot exceed. For lesson one it is 180 lb per person in the Cessna 162, Piper Warrior and Diamond DA20; 180 lb each and 360 lb combined for the lesson with a guest; and 200 lb in the Cirrus SR22. The simulator has no weight limit. Our Terms: “If you exceed the published limit for the flight you booked, we cannot fly you. In that case the booking is treated as a cancellation inside 24 hours and the full amount is charged and forfeited.” If you’re close to a limit, call (818) 960-1285 before you book.

How Old Do I Have To Be?

Anyone under 18 must come with a parent or legal guardian, who signs the liability release. The FAA sets the ages for later steps: 16 for a student pilot certificate and solo flight, and 17 for the private pilot certificate.

What Should I Bring?

A valid photo ID if you’re 18 or over (a passport if you’re not a U.S. resident), and your logbook if you have one. We provide the headset. Our Terms: “Please arrive 15 minutes early. Arriving more than 30 minutes late is treated as a no-show. The flight is marked complete and charged in full.”

What If The Weather Is Bad?

Safety comes first. If weather, maintenance or another safety reason means we cancel, our Terms say: “If we cancel, we will reschedule you at no cost and your purchase stays valid indefinitely.”

Can I Reschedule Or Cancel?

From our Terms: “Reschedule: free with 48+ hours notice. A $50 rebooking fee applies inside 48 hours.” “Cancel: cancellations inside 48 hours, and no-shows, are charged the full price.” “Instead of a refund, you may give your flight to someone else, free of charge, with at least 48 hours written notice to info@essenceflight.com.”

How Much Does The Whole Private Pilot License Cost?

Our Private Pilot course starts at $10,400 (Standard) and $15,400 (Comprehensive), with ground school included. At a free consultation we give you a written training plan and price.
