Flight School Near Culver City
Culver City has always been a place where people make things, from movies to airplanes. If you want to learn to fly, Essence Flight School is about 19 miles north at Van Nuys Airport, with 20 school-owned aircraft, an FAA-approved full-motion simulator and lessons from 9 AM to 9 PM every day.
Culver City is best known as a studio town, with soundstages that have turned out films for about a century. Fewer people know how close the city sits to a major chapter in American aviation. Just south of Culver City, in what is now Playa Vista, Hughes Aircraft once had its plant and private runway, and the giant wooden flying boat known as the Spruce Goose was built there. Some of those hangars still stand.
That mix of film and flight shows up in who calls us. We train camera operators, editors and producers who want to understand aerial work from the pilot's side, engineers and software developers from the Hayden Tract and the tech offices nearby, teachers and city employees, and plenty of people who simply looked up one day and decided they wanted to be the one flying.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Essence Flight School owns all 20 of its aircraft outright, and maintains them in-house, so availability does not depend on outside owners. You will start in a trainer such as the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, Diamond DA20 or Piper Warrior, and move up to the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the twin-engine Piper Seminole as your ratings grow. Cockpits are set up the same way across the fleet, so switching airplanes feels natural.

The 10 West, Then The 405 North
By route planner, our school at 7900 Balboa Blvd in Van Nuys is about 18.7 miles from Culver City City Hall, roughly 26 minutes with no traffic. Most drivers take the 10 west to the 405, head north over the Sepulveda Pass, and exit at Sherman Way to head east to the airport. Some prefer to pick up the 405 directly from Culver Boulevard or Washington.
The Sepulveda Pass is the whole story here. It is the one slow stretch at weekday rush hour, so Culver City students tend to fly mid-morning or early afternoon and skip it entirely. Evenings and weekends are open too, since we fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. Students from Downtown Culver City, Fox Hills and the Hayden Tract often lock in a regular weekly slot.

Teen Flight Training (Ages 10–15)
From $4,200
Most teens finish over 4–8 months
A fixed-price, school-friendly program for Culver City families: ten flight hours, three full-motion simulator hours and the same instructor every lesson, paid in two parts of $2,500 and then $1,700.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Built around 25 flight hours plus 3 simulator hours
A lower-cost certificate for Culver City residents who want daytime recreational flying with one passenger. Taught in the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, with the hours counting toward a private certificate later.
Private Pilot License
From $10,400 (Comprehensive $15,400, Premium $22,000)
Two to four months for most students
The core certificate for anyone who wants to carry passengers and fly at night. Culver City students who fly mid-morning to skip the Pass often settle into two or three lessons a week.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
About 6–8 weeks
A favorite with the systems-minded engineers and developers we train from Culver City. Up to 20 hours in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX count toward the rating, and the procedure work is deeply satisfying.
Commercial Pilot License
$15,400 package ($15,900 list)
A few months if you already hold private and instrument
Required for any paid flying, including the kinds of aerial work production people encounter on set. The package covers complex time in the Piper Arrow and 20 hours in the full-motion simulator.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated, about one week
An accelerated, fixed-price week in our Piper Seminole twin. For Culver City freelancers it fits neatly into the gap between two jobs, and it is a key rating for any professional pilot.
Flight Instructor Program (CFI, CFII, MEI)
From $15,400
Four-week intensive course
All three instructor ratings in four demanding weeks. It suits Culver City pilots who enjoy explaining things clearly, and it is the paid bridge between a commercial certificate and an airline job.

Santa Monica Airport Is Five Miles Away. Here Is The Catch
Santa Monica Airport is about 5.4 miles from Culver City City Hall by route planner, about a ten-minute drive with no traffic. On distance alone, it wins. But its future is set: under the 2017 settlement between the City of Santa Monica and the FAA, the city may close the airport after December 31, 2028, and the settlement allowed the runway to be shortened to 3,500 feet.
Training is not a weekend project. A private pilot certificate takes months, a career track takes a year or more, and most pilots want to keep renting and flying from the same field afterward. Van Nuys has two parallel runways, 8,000 feet and 4,000 feet, a control tower and a long-term future. For many Culver City students, a few extra miles up the 405 is the safer bet.
After your instructor's takeoff from Van Nuys, you take the controls over the Valley and fly toward the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown. From there the route turns west toward the coast. That leg takes you back across the Westside, where Culver City, the Baldwin Hills and Ballona Creek running out to the ocean are easy to pick out, before you reach Marina del Rey and turn north along the bay while staying clear of LAX airspace. Prices begin at $229 for a solo flyer, $299 for two people and $499 for the Luxury flight in our Cirrus.

For Filmmakers And Photographers: Understanding The Aerial Shot
Culver City production people often come to us with a specific curiosity. They have worked with aerial footage, drones or helicopter shoots and want to understand airspace, weather and what a pilot is actually managing during a flight. Even if you never fly a camera ship yourself, learning to fly changes how you plan an aerial sequence. You understand why a flight path has to be what it is, why a controller says no, and why the light at 6 PM looks so different from 2,000 feet.
Flight training is not a film course, and we do not teach aerial photography. But a private pilot certificate gives you fluency in the language of the air, and a discovery flight is a great way to scout how Los Angeles looks from above before your next project.

Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
A Full-Motion Simulator In Every Course
The Redbird MCX is part of every Essence program, not an optional extra. It moves with your inputs, banking and pitching like the airplane, so you can rehearse a lesson before you fly it, repeat a tricky approach until it is smooth, and practice emergencies that no one should try for real. Culver City students who think in systems tend to love it, because you can pause a scenario and dig into exactly what went wrong.

Its FAA Letter of Authorization allows up to 20 hours toward an instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward a commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward a private pilot certificate. Learning Next To Some Of The Busiest Airspace In The Country
Culver City sits just north of LAX, and residents hear and see the airline traffic every day. When you learn at Van Nuys, you train inside a system built around that traffic. Van Nuys itself is a towered airport, Burbank's Class C airspace is next door, and the Los Angeles Class B airspace shapes where training flights can and cannot go.
That sounds intimidating at first. In practice, it is one of the best things about training here. You talk to the tower from your first flight, learn to read charts with real consequences, and become comfortable in a radio environment that many pilots who learned at quiet fields only meet much later. On a discovery flight the instructor will show you how the route stays clear of LAX airspace as you turn up the coast.

Engineers And Developers: Flying As A Systems Problem
We train a lot of people who think in systems, and many of them come from the tech and media offices around Culver City. They usually enjoy the parts of training that other students find dry: aircraft systems, performance charts, weight and balance, and the logic of instrument procedures. Ground school is included with every course, in person at Van Nuys or online at your own pace, and covers everything on the FAA knowledge test.
For these students the instrument rating is often the most satisfying stage. It is precise, procedural and deeply rewarding when an approach comes together exactly as planned. Our Instrument Rating course is $11,700, and much of the early procedure work happens in the Redbird MCX.
Every student remembers their first solo. It usually comes after you have mastered takeoffs, landings, traffic patterns and the basic emergency procedures with your instructor beside you. Before it, you pass a short pre-solo knowledge test, hold a student pilot certificate and an FAA medical certificate, and receive your instructor's written endorsement.
Then one day, after a few laps of the pattern together, your instructor steps out and you fly three takeoffs and landings by yourself, talking to Van Nuys tower on your own. Students can solo from age 16. Many of our Culver City students say the drive home over the Sepulveda Pass that afternoon was the best commute of their lives, traffic and all. After the first solo, training moves on to solo practice, cross-country flights and preparation for the checkride.
Rent the same airplanes you train in. After a checkout flight with one of our instructors, licensed pilots can rent from $179 an hour with fuel included, from the Cessna 162 and Piper Warrior up to the Cirrus and Seminole. The full rate table is on our aircraft rental page.

Culver City Families And Teen Pilots
Parents in Culver City ask us regularly about getting a teenager started. Teen Flight Training is for ages 10 to 15 and costs $4,200 all-in: ten hours of real flight training, three hours in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and seven hours of ground school and briefings, with the same instructor every lesson. Most teens finish over four to eight months, flying on weekends and school holidays.
Teens aiming higher can go on to the full private pilot course, solo at 16 and take the checkride at 17. Parents are welcome to join the pre-flight briefing and see the school for themselves.
Our school has been teaching at Van Nuys Airport since 2007. We are a Part 61 school with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, a 100% safety record and a 4.9-star rating from more than 600 reviews on Google and Yelp. More than 2,000 discovery flights have taken off from our ramp.
Every course has a fixed, published price backed by a lowest price guarantee on comparable training. Financing starts at $2,500 down, with an interest-free in-house payment plan or long-term financing through Stratus Financial for qualified applicants.
Our free consultation is thirty minutes, one-on-one, in person. You will tour the school, walk out to the airplanes, see the Redbird MCX simulator and meet instructors, then leave with a written training plan and exact pricing. Choose a mid-morning slot on the week planner below and the Sepulveda Pass will barely register.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
By route planner, about 18.7 miles from Culver City City Hall, roughly 26 minutes with no traffic. Most drivers take the 10 west to the 405 north over the Sepulveda Pass, then Sherman Way east.
When Is The Best Time To Drive Up For A Lesson?
The Sepulveda Pass is the slow stretch at weekday rush hour. Mid-morning and early-afternoon lessons usually skip it, and evening and weekend slots are available too.
Why Not Train At Santa Monica Airport?
It is closer, but under the 2017 settlement with the FAA the city may close it after December 31, 2028, and its runway was shortened to 3,500 feet. Many students prefer an airport with a long-term future.
Is Flying Near LAX Dangerous For Students?
No. Training flights follow published airspace rules and air traffic control instructions, and instructors plan routes that stay clear of LAX airspace. Learning in busy airspace builds strong radio and navigation skills.
Do You Teach Aerial Photography?
No. We teach flying. A pilot certificate does give you a working understanding of airspace and flight planning, which many production professionals find useful.
How Much Does Flight Training Cost?
Discovery flights start at $229, the Sport Pilot License is $8,400, the Private Pilot License starts at $10,400 and the Instrument Rating is $11,700. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
Can I See The Simulator Before Enrolling?
Yes. You will see the Redbird MCX at a free 30-minute consultation, or you can fly it for an hour in a $189 simulator discovery session.
