Flight School Near Tarzana, Just Across The Valley
Tarzana knows how to use a Saturday well. Spend the next one at the controls of an airplane. Essence Flight School trains Tarzana pilots at Van Nuys Airport, a short drive across the Valley, in 20 airplanes the school owns, with a full-motion Redbird MCX simulator built into every program.
Tarzana takes its name from the ranch that Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the Tarzan books, owned here in the early twentieth century. It is fitting that a community named after an adventure story produces so many people who want a little adventure of their own.
Today Tarzana is a quieter kind of place: tree-lined streets climbing into the hills south of Ventura Boulevard, family homes on the flats to the north, and a commercial strip full of restaurants, medical offices and small businesses. The people who live here tend to be busy and organized, and they want any new commitment to be worth their time.
Learning to fly is. It is a skill that rewards focus, it opens up Southern California in a way nothing else does, and at Essence Flight School it is built around a real Tarzana schedule: open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, at Van Nuys Airport.

Two Valley Landmarks From The Same Era
Tarzana and Van Nuys Airport grew up together. The airport opened in 1928 as Metropolitan Airport, in the same years that the Burroughs ranch was being divided into the neighborhood that carries its name. Over the following decades, the airport became a center for aviation in the Valley, and today it is one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world.
For a Tarzana student, that history is part of the experience. You learn to fly from a field with nearly a century of aviation behind it, alongside business jets, helicopters, vintage airplanes and other students. The tower, the parallel runways and the steady flow of traffic make it an excellent place to build real-world skills from your very first flight.
It also means the airport is not going anywhere. The place you learn to fly is the place you can keep flying from for years, renting the same airplanes you trained in once you hold a license.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Essence Flight School holds title to all 20 airplanes it flies. Begin in the Cessna 162 or the Diamond DA20, train in the Piper Warrior, build complex time in the Piper Arrow, move into the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and earn your multi-engine rating in the Piper Seminole twin. The cockpits are standardized across the fleet for easy transitions.

Doctors, Nurses And The Checklist Habit
Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center sits right on Reseda Boulevard, and the medical offices along Ventura Boulevard bring doctors, nurses, therapists and technicians into the neighborhood every day. Medicine and aviation share more than people expect. Hospitals borrowed the checklist and the team briefing from the cockpit, and medical professionals tend to recognize the culture as soon as they start training.
That familiarity helps. A pilot runs a checklist before every flight, briefs the plan, monitors the instruments and debriefs afterward. Clinicians who already work that way usually find the structure comforting rather than tedious. They also appreciate the flexibility of Part 61 training, which lets lessons fit around call schedules and rotating shifts.
There is also a practical overlap. Pilots and clinicians both need a current medical standard, both manage fatigue, and both work in environments where small mistakes compound. Many Tarzana healthcare students say flying gives them the same focus as their work, with the added reward of a view.
Around A Call Schedule
Book lessons on days off and use the Redbird MCX simulator to stay sharp when your rotation is heavy.
For Travel Between Clinics And Conferences
An instrument rating, $11,700, makes flying a practical way to travel when the weather is less than perfect.

Van Nuys Airport sits a short distance north and east of Tarzana. Most students head up Reseda Boulevard and cut east on Victory Boulevard or Sherman Way, or follow Ventura Boulevard east and turn north. The 101 east to the 405 north is another option, especially when you are coming from the hills south of Ventura.
Door to door, figure on about fifteen minutes, depending on where you start and the time of day. You will find on-site parking at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3. That is close enough to fit a lesson into an early morning before the 101 fills up, or into an evening as the Valley cools.

How A Tarzana Pilot's Training Usually Unfolds
Training often begins with a single discovery flight, sometimes a gift, sometimes a decision someone has been putting off for years. You take the controls for about an hour with an instructor beside you, and you find out quickly whether flying is for you.
If it is, the next step is a plan. Most Tarzana students settle into two or three lessons a week, often early mornings, with ground school online in the evenings. The first solo comes when your instructor is satisfied you are ready, then cross-country flights to other airports, then checkride preparation. Students who keep a steady rhythm usually finish a private pilot license in a few months.
After that, the weekends change. Santa Barbara, Catalina, Mammoth and the Channel Islands coastline are the kinds of destinations that turn from long drives into morning flights, and the habit of a well-used Saturday becomes a habit of flying.
Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
Simulator Practice Is Part Of The Plan
At Essence Flight School, the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is woven into every program rather than sold on the side. For Tarzana's clinicians and busy professionals it fits neatly into short windows: thirty focused minutes rehearsing an approach can make the next flight far more productive. It moves with your inputs and can recreate any airport and any weather.
Practice procedures before you fly them
Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate
Brief and debrief the same scenario on the screen
The MCX's FAA Letter of Authorization credits up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward the commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward the private pilot certificate. Visitors get a close look at it, and at the Redbird TD2 desktop trainer, during a free consultation.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
Tarzana's southern edge climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains, and from the air you can follow the ridgeline west toward Topanga and east toward the Sepulveda Pass. The open Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa sit just to the east, a green landmark that pilots use every day around Van Nuys.
On a discovery flight or a training lesson, those landmarks become your navigation aids. You will learn to find the airport from the basin, judge your altitude over the ridges and plan a route to the coast that keeps you comfortably clear of terrain. Flying over your own neighborhood is a good way to learn, because you already know what it looks like from the ground.
Encino Reservoir and the canyons above Reseda Boulevard are easy to spot once you know where to look, and recognizing them is a small thrill that keeps early flights fun.
Everything We Fly, Teach And Charge, In One Brochure
Courses and exact pricing, the fleet, the full-motion simulator, financing options and how training works at Van Nuys, in a brochure you can read in five minutes and share with your family.
Many Tarzana families start with a teenager. Kids aged 10 to 15 can enroll in the Teen Aviation Course, a $4,200 package of hands-on flying and simulator practice with an FAA-certified instructor. At 16, a student can fly solo, which is a remarkable achievement to carry into a college application or a future career.
Parents usually want to know about safety, and the answer is the school's record: a 100% safety record with zero accidents, 20 school-owned airplanes maintained under the school's own control, and one-on-one instruction. Families are welcome at a free consultation to see the operation and ask questions.
Older teens on a career track can move straight into the private pilot program after the teen course, and those who keep going can earn a commercial certificate and instructor ratings while their classmates are still choosing majors.
Your training airplanes become your rental airplanes. Once you hold a license and pass a checkout, the same aircraft are available from $179 an hour, fuel included, for Tarzana pilots heading to Santa Barbara or Catalina. Details live on the aircraft rental page.

Every Airplane On The Ramp Belongs To The School
Essence Flight School owns every airplane in its fleet. That is not common, and it gives the school direct control over maintenance, scheduling and standards. The fleet covers every stage: two-seat trainers, the Piper Warrior, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the twin-engine Piper Seminole.
Cockpit setups are standardized, so moving up to a more capable airplane feels like an extension of what you already know. Once you are licensed, you can rent those same airplanes after a checkout, from $179 an hour with fuel included.
Essence Flight School has trained pilots since 2007, with a 4.9-star rating on 600+ Google and Yelp reviews and a 98% first-time checkride pass rate. More than 2,000 discovery flights have been flown here.
Prices for every course are posted openly and protected by a lowest price guarantee, with short-term financing for those who want it. Ground school comes with the programs, at the airport or online. The brochure lists every course side by side, so you can review the options at home before you visit.
If you are comparing schools, ask how many airplanes each one owns, whether simulator time is included, and what the published total is for your goal. Those three answers explain most of the price differences you will see.
Pick a time on the week planner and meet an instructor at Van Nuys Airport. You will see the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and the airplanes on the ramp, talk through goals, schedule and budget, and leave with a written training plan.
It costs nothing and takes no commitment. Pair it with a discovery flight if you want to feel the controls before you decide.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
Usually about fifteen minutes, depending on traffic. Head north on Reseda Boulevard and east on Victory or Sherman Way, or take the 101 east to the 405 north.
Can I Fit Flight Training Around A Medical Schedule?
