Flight School Near El Segundo, Learn To Fly At Van Nuys
El Segundo lives beside the runways of LAX and works in the aerospace industry, so the cockpit is closer than it looks. Essence Flight School trains South Bay pilots at Van Nuys Airport with 20 school-owned airplanes, a full-motion Redbird MCX simulator and fixed, published prices for every program.
Few small cities are as tied to aviation and space as El Segundo. Los Angeles Air Force Base sits inside the city limits, and the business parks east of Sepulveda Boulevard have been home to aerospace and defense work for generations. A lot of people in town design, test or support aircraft and spacecraft every day, yet relatively few have flown one themselves.
Learning to fly closes that gap. Engineers tell us the private pilot license changed how they think about their own work, from load factors and stall speeds to the way a checklist is written. For others, it is simply the most satisfying thing they have done outside the office. Either way, Essence Flight School is set up to teach precise people precisely.
The town's small size helps too. El Segundo has its own school district, a walkable Main Street and a strong sense of community, so a first solo tends to become a story told at the office, the ballfield and the coffee shop. Hearing that a neighbor did it is often the push someone needs to book a first flight of their own.

Your First Flight
Book A Discovery Flight Over The Bay And The Basin
Discovery flights start at $229 for about an hour, and you are the one flying, with an FAA-certified instructor beside you. Upgrade to the Cirrus SR22 Turbo for $499, $699 or $949, covering 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Every flight includes the full route over Los Angeles, with weather and air traffic control setting the final path, and more than 2,000 people have flown it with us.

Growing Up Under The LAX Departure Path
If you live west of Sepulveda, airliners have been part of the soundtrack your whole life. Plenty of local kids can name the airliner overhead before they can see it. For many of them, that curiosity becomes a serious question in high school: how does someone actually become the pilot of one of those airplanes?
The answer starts with small airplanes. Every airline captain once flew a trainer like the ones on our ramp, and the steps are well defined: private pilot, instrument rating, commercial certificate, multi-engine rating, flight instructor, then hours. Essence Flight School offers every one of those steps at one airport, and the Airline Pilot Program packages them into nine months.
For Younger Students
The Teen Aviation Course, for ages 10 to 15, turns plane-spotting into real lessons with an instructor. At 16, a student can fly solo.
For Families Planning Ahead
Fixed, published prices make it possible to plan a teen's path from day one to a professional certificate without guesswork.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
All 20 airplanes at Essence Flight School are owned by the school, every single one. The range runs from the Cessna 162 and Diamond DA20 trainers through the Piper Warrior and the complex Piper Arrow to the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the Piper Seminole twin. The cockpits are set up in a standardized way, so moving from one airplane to the next is smooth.

Why Drive To Van Nuys From The South Bay
The South Bay has its own airports, including Hawthorne Municipal and Zamperini Field in Torrance, so it is fair to ask why El Segundo students make the drive north. The usual reasons are practical. Essence Flight School owns all 20 of its airplanes, from two-seat trainers to the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the Piper Seminole twin, so you can go from your first flight to a multi-engine rating in one fleet with one team.
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is part of every program, the school is open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, and the published prices come with a lowest price guarantee. Van Nuys is also one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world, which means you learn real radio work and traffic awareness from your first week.
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Courses Offered
Every Course, One Fixed Price
Every program El Segundo students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
$229 (Luxury Cirrus $499 / $699 / $949)
About 1 hour (luxury 60, 90 or 120 minutes)
The simplest test for anyone who has watched LAX traffic for years. You fly the airplane with an instructor beside you, then decide whether a license is the next step.
Teen Aviation Course
From $4,200
Ages 10 to 15, flight and simulator time included
For El Segundo kids who already know every airliner by sound. Real lessons with an instructor give that curiosity a structure, the simulator hours build good habits early, and the fixed price helps parents plan.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Fixed course, 25 hours of flight time
An economical certificate flown in the Cessna 162, limited to daytime flying with one passenger. Good for South Bay residents who want to fly for fun without the full private pilot program.
Private Pilot License
$10,400 / $15,400 / $22,000
Commonly about 3 to 6 months at a steady pace
The core certificate. For aerospace professionals it adds hands-on understanding to the work they already do, and it opens weekend trips to the desert, the Central Coast and Catalina with family aboard.
Turbo Cirrus Program
Cirrus upgrade +$300/hr
Built around your goals
Training in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo suits El Segundo professionals who travel often and want a fast, modern airplane for trips up and down California, learned properly from the first hour rather than picked up later.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
Commonly about 6 to 8 weeks
South Bay mornings often start under low clouds. This rating trains you to climb through that layer legally and safely, and some of the required time can come from the Redbird MCX.
Commercial Pilot License
From $15,400
Set by your hours and schedule
The step from flying for yourself to flying for pay. A logical step for El Segundo residents who want to work in aviation rather than only design for it, and the foundation for instructor and charter jobs.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated 7-day course
One focused week in the Piper Seminole. Engineers who can take a block of vacation often finish the rating in a single stretch and return to work with twin-engine privileges.
Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII / MEI)
From $15,400
Set by your schedule
Teaching is how new professional pilots build hours. Former engineers often make clear, methodical instructors, and the work keeps you flying every day while the logbook grows toward airline minimums.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
9 months, zero to professional certificate
A structured path from your first flight to a professional certificate, with a guaranteed paid instructor job for graduates. For El Segundo residents ready to move from the ground side of aviation to the flight deck.

Learning The Airspace Above Your Own Neighborhood
El Segundo sits under some of the most carefully managed airspace in the country. The LAX Class B airspace stacks over the city, and a published route known as the LAX Special Flight Rules Area lets small airplanes cross above the airport at set altitudes by following specific procedures. Understanding how all of that fits together is part of private pilot ground school.
Students often say the best moment comes when they look at a sectional chart and finally see their own house inside those rings. Your instructor will explain how pilots plan around Class B airspace, when a clearance is needed, and how the Special Flight Rules Area works, so the sky over your street stops being a mystery.
The 405 Runs Door To Door
Van Nuys Airport is about 27.7 miles from El Segundo, and almost all of the trip is one freeway. Pick up the 405 at Rosecrans, El Segundo Boulevard or Imperial Highway, head north past LAX and Culver City, climb through the Sepulveda Pass, and exit in the Valley toward Balboa Boulevard. The school is at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3.
El Segundo students who work standard aerospace hours usually fly in the early evening, on Fridays when many offices run a compressed schedule, or on weekends. With the school open until 9 PM seven days a week, there is room to book lessons around the 405 rather than at its worst moments.

Engineers want to see the system. Under FAA Part 61, your instructor builds a syllabus around your goals and pace, and each lesson has a clear objective and a debrief. You will know why the airplane does what it does, not just how to make it do it.
Ground school covers aerodynamics, aircraft systems, performance and weight-and-balance, weather, regulations and navigation, with full preparation for the FAA knowledge test. You can take it in person at Van Nuys or online. Many El Segundo students study during the week and drive up only to fly, which saves time on the freeway.
No program at Essence Flight School is sold without the Redbird MCX. The full-motion simulator is part of the plan from lesson one: engineers in particular like rehearsing a procedure in the sim, flying it for real, then returning to the sim to dissect what changed. It banks and pitches like the airplane and can load any airport in any weather.
Practice procedures before you fly them
Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate
Brief and debrief the same scenario on the screen
The MCX carries FAA approval, so simulator sessions are loggable training time. Its FAA Letter of Authorization allows up to 20 hours toward an instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward a commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward a private pilot certificate. During a free consultation you will see the MCX in person, along with the Redbird TD2 desktop trainer.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.

What Your First Ten Hours Look Like
Early lessons focus on the fundamentals: straight and level flight, climbs, descents and turns, then slow flight and stalls, all with an instructor beside you. Between flights, you rehearse checklists and radio calls in the Redbird MCX, so the next lesson in the airplane starts further ahead.
Takeoffs and landings follow, practiced in the traffic pattern at Van Nuys until they feel routine. Every lesson ends with a debrief, and your progress is logged, so you always know exactly where you are in the syllabus and what comes next.
Students who fly two or three times a week usually move through this stage fastest, because skills stay fresh from one session to the next. That is the rhythm we recommend to El Segundo students who can manage it around the 405.

A Paid Instructor Job Waiting For Airline Program Graduates
For El Segundo residents thinking about a full career change, the Airline Pilot Program runs nine months from zero experience to a professional certificate, for $84,000. Graduates are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at Essence Flight School, $48,000 a year full-time, which is how most new professional pilots build the hours the airlines require.
Short-term financing is available, and an instructor can show you a month-by-month plan before you sign anything. If you would rather test the water first, start with a private pilot license and decide on the career path once you know you love it.
Not everyone wants a new career. Plenty of El Segundo families want a private pilot license so they can fly to the desert, the Central Coast or Catalina for the day. The private pilot packages are priced at $10,400, $15,400 and $22,000, and the Sport Pilot License at $8,400 is a lighter option for daytime flying with one passenger.
Once licensed, you can rent the same airplanes you trained in, from $179 an hour with fuel included, so there is no need to buy an airplane to keep flying.
A license also changes how you see the South Bay. The coastline from Palos Verdes to Malibu, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the desert beyond the mountains all become places you can reach on a Saturday, planned and flown yourself.
Choose a slot on the week planner and drive up when it suits you. At the consultation, an instructor will walk you through every program, show you the Redbird MCX simulator and the airplanes, and build a training plan with timelines and costs. It is free, and there is no obligation.
Many El Segundo visitors pair it with a discovery flight so they can talk through the plan and then feel the controls the same afternoon.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
About 27.7 miles, nearly all of it on the 405. Head north past LAX and through the Sepulveda Pass, then exit toward Balboa Boulevard in Van Nuys.
