You already know the coastline from the sand. Learn to fly it from above. Essence Flight School trains Venice pilots at Van Nuys Airport, just over the Sepulveda Pass, with 20 airplanes the school owns outright, a full-motion Redbird MCX simulator and one-on-one instructors open 9 AM to 9 PM, every day.
For decades the obvious answer for a Westside student pilot was Santa Monica Airport, a few minutes up the road from Venice. That picture is changing. Under a 2017 agreement between the City of Santa Monica and the FAA, the runway was shortened, and the city may close the airport after December 31, 2028. Anyone starting a license today would be finishing it while that clock runs down.
Van Nuys Airport is the steadier bet. It is one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world, it has two runways and a control tower, and it is where Essence Flight School has trained pilots since 2007. For a Venice resident, the trip is a single run up the 405, and the airport you learn at is the same one you will keep flying from long after your checkride.
That continuity matters more than most people expect. The radio calls, the runway layout, the reporting points and the way the controllers work all become second nature here, and none of it has to be relearned halfway through your training.

The Full Route Over Los Angeles
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Courses Offered
Every Course, One Fixed Price
Every program Venice students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
$229 (Luxury Cirrus $499 / $699 / $949)
About 1 hour (luxury 60, 90 or 120 minutes)
The easiest way for a Venice local to test the idea. You take the controls with an instructor beside you, and on a clear day the route can carry you toward the coast you see from the boardwalk.
Teen Aviation Course
From $4,200
Ages 10 to 15, includes flight and simulator time
For the Venice kid who stares at the airliners lining up over the bay. Real flight lessons and simulator time with an instructor, in a fixed package that parents can plan around.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Fixed course, 25 hours of flight time
A lighter, lower-cost certificate in the two-seat Cessna 162. It suits Westsiders who want daytime pleasure flying with one friend aboard and do not need the full private pilot privileges.
Private Pilot License
$10,400 / $15,400 / $22,000
Commonly about 3 to 6 months at a steady pace
The certificate that lets you carry passengers almost anywhere in the country. For Venice residents it is the route to weekend trips up the coast without the drive on Pacific Coast Highway.
Turbo Cirrus Program
Cirrus upgrade +$300/hr
Built around your goals
Train or transition in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo. Popular with Westside professionals who want a fast, capable airplane for business trips and long weekends, and want to learn it properly from the start.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
Commonly about 6 to 8 weeks
The rating that matters most near the beach. Flying by instruments lets you work with the marine layer instead of being grounded by it, and the Redbird MCX can log part of the time.
Commercial Pilot License
From $15,400
Set by your hours and schedule
The first certificate that lets you fly for compensation. Venice students on a career track use it as the step between their private license and the instructor work that builds hours.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated 7-day course
A one-week course in the Piper Seminole twin. Useful for Westsiders aiming at charter or airline work who want the rating finished quickly, between projects, without stretching it across months of weekend lessons.
Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII / MEI)
From $15,400
Set by your schedule
Teach others to fly and build hours while you do it. A strong option for Venice pilots who want to keep living near the beach and earn a living in aviation while their logbook grows.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
9 months, zero to professional certificate
The full path from day one to commercial pilot, with a guaranteed paid flight instructor position for graduates at $48,000 a year full-time. Built for career changers ready to commit.

Getting From Abbot Kinney To The Ramp
Van Nuys Airport is about 21 miles from Venice, and the usual route is simple: get on the 405 near Venice Boulevard or Washington, ride it north through the Sepulveda Pass past the Getty Center, and exit in the Valley for Balboa Boulevard. The school sits at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3, with parking on site.
Traffic on the pass is the honest variable. Venice students who train on weekdays tend to book early-morning or evening slots, when the 405 moves and the Valley air is calm, and save midday blocks for weekends. Because the school is open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week, you can shape lessons around the freeway instead of fighting it.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Essence Flight School owns all 20 of its aircraft, every single one, and none are borrowed from outside owners. The fleet covers your whole journey: the Cessna 162 and Diamond DA20 for early training, the Piper Warrior for private and instrument work, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, and the Piper Seminole twin for multi-engine training. The cockpits are standardized, so moving between airplanes feels natural.

Who Comes Up From Venice To Learn To Fly
Venice has always attracted people who build their own schedules: designers, editors, musicians, founders working out of the Silicon Beach offices around Main Street and Rose Avenue, and plenty of restaurant and hospitality people who work nights. Flexible flying hours suit that crowd, and many of them start with a single discovery flight booked as a birthday present.
Families along the canals and in Oakwood often have teenagers who have spent years watching airplanes line up for LAX over the bay. And there are Westside professionals who travel for work and want to understand the cockpit they ride in every week. Each group ends up on a different program, which is exactly why the school publishes every price up front.
Creatives And Founders
Short, focused lessons fit around launches, shoots and deadlines, and training under Part 61 lets you speed up or pause without losing your place.
Teens And Their Parents
The Teen Aviation Course is built for ages 10 to 15, and older teens can solo an airplane at 16, before many of them have a full driver's license.
Career Changers
The Airline Pilot Program runs nine months from zero experience to a professional certificate, with a paid instructor job guarantee for graduates.
Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
Your Training Includes The Redbird MCX
Every Essence program includes time in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, so it never shows up as a surprise line item. Westside students lean on it on gray mornings: brief a maneuver in the sim, fly it in the airplane once the marine layer lifts, then replay anything that felt shaky. The cockpit moves, banks and pitches with you, and the scenery can be any airport in any weather.
Practice procedures before you fly them
Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate
Brief and debrief the same scenario on the screen
Because the MCX is FAA-approved, the hours you spend in it go in your logbook. Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, you can log up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward the commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward the private pilot certificate. Come see it, along with the smaller Redbird TD2 desktop trainer, when you book a free consultation.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
A typical Venice private pilot student flies two or three times a week. One session might be an early takeoff while the marine layer still sits over the beach and the Valley is already clear. Another might be an evening in the Redbird MCX simulator, rehearsing a procedure before trying it in the airplane. A third could be a weekend block of ground study, in person in Van Nuys or online at home.
Every lesson is one-on-one with an FAA-certified instructor, and your progress is tracked lesson by lesson so nothing gets skipped. Students who keep a steady rhythm finish faster and spend less, because they are not re-learning last week's landing before they can move on.

Training Above The Marine Layer
Anyone who has walked Ocean Front Walk on a June morning knows the gray that rolls in off the bay. Coastal fog and low clouds are a real factor for airports near the water, and they are a big reason Westside pilots value a Valley base. The San Fernando Valley often clears earlier in the day than the beach, which keeps more lessons on the calendar.
Learning the weather is part of the license, not something to avoid. Your instructor will teach you to read the forecasts, understand why the marine layer behaves the way it does, and decide with confidence when a flight should go and when it should wait. On days when the airplane stays on the ground, the simulator keeps your training moving.
Venice families can check the record for themselves: 4.9 stars over 600+ Google and Yelp reviews, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, and a 100% safety record with zero accidents. More than 2,000 discovery flights have been flown from this ramp. Those numbers are easy to look up, and we encourage Venice families to read the reviews before they visit.
The school operates under FAA Part 61, which gives you a flexible syllabus built around your pace rather than a fixed class calendar. All 20 airplanes belong to the school, so maintenance and scheduling stay under one roof, and the cockpits are set up consistently so moving from one type to the next feels familiar.
Everything We Fly, Teach And Charge, In One Brochure
Courses and exact pricing, the fleet, the full-motion simulator, financing options and how training works at Van Nuys, in a brochure you can read in five minutes and share with your family.
Fixed Prices, A Lowest Price Guarantee And Financing
Westside budgets are already stretched, so surprises are the last thing anyone needs. Every program at Essence Flight School has a published price, from the $229 discovery flight to the $84,000 Airline Pilot Program. The school also offers a lowest price guarantee, and short-term financing is available for students who would rather spread the cost.
Download the brochure to see every course side by side, or book a free consultation and an instructor will walk you through which package matches your goal, how many lessons a week make sense, and what the total looks like before you pay anything.
Your license does not end your connection to the fleet. After a checkout, Venice pilots rent the very airplanes they learned in, starting at $179 an hour with fuel included, so a sunset flight up the coast does not require owning anything. The aircraft rental page lists the details.

From Silicon Beach To The Flight Deck
Some Venice students arrive for a hobby and leave with a new career in mind. The Airline Pilot Program at Essence Flight School takes a student with no experience to a professional certificate in nine months, for $84,000. It combines the private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and instructor stages into one planned sequence, so there are no gaps between ratings.
Graduates of the Airline Program are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at the school, $48,000 a year full-time. That job is how most new professional pilots build the hours the airlines require, and doing it at the airport where you trained means you already know the airplanes, the airspace and the people.
If you are weighing a move out of tech, hospitality or the creative industries, the free consultation is the right first conversation. An instructor will lay out the timeline month by month, explain the medical certificate you will need, and show you what financing could look like before you decide.
The fastest way to turn curiosity into a plan is the free consultation. Pick a time on the week planner, drive up the 405, and spend it with an instructor at Van Nuys Airport. You will see the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, walk the ramp, look at the airplanes you would train in, and leave with a written training plan.
Bring your questions about medical certificates, schedules, costs and timelines. You can also book the consultation and a discovery flight for the same afternoon, so you talk through the plan and then fly toward the coastline you came from.
Ground school is included with the programs, and you can take it in person at Van Nuys or online on your own time. Many Venice students study at home during the week and save the drive for flying. Topics cover aerodynamics, regulations, airspace, weather, navigation, aircraft systems and radio work, with full preparation for the FAA knowledge test.
Living next to some of the most complex airspace in the country is a good teacher. Once you understand how LAX, Santa Monica and the coastal routes fit together on a chart, the busy sky over your own neighborhood starts to make sense.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
It is about 21 miles away. Most Venice students take the 405 north through the Sepulveda Pass and exit toward Balboa Boulevard. Weekday early mornings and evenings are usually the easiest times to make the drive.
Why Not Learn At Santa Monica Airport?
Santa Monica Airport's runway was shortened after a 2017 agreement with the FAA, and the city may close it after December 31, 2028. Training at Van Nuys means the airport you learn at is the one you can keep flying from for the long term.
Does The Marine Layer Cancel A Lot Of Lessons?
Coastal fog affects the beach more than the Valley, which often clears earlier. When weather does stop a flight, you can use the Redbird MCX simulator, which is built into every program, so the day still counts.
What Do Private Pilot Packages Cost For A Venice Student?
Three private pilot packages are published, at $10,400, $15,400 and $22,000, and each comes with the school's lowest price guarantee. Short-term financing is there if you want to pay over time.
Can I Fly Over Venice On A Discovery Flight?
Yes. The coast is part of the full route every flight flies, weather and air traffic control permitting, and you fly the airplane yourself for about an hour from $229.
Is Essence Flight School Part 141?
No. Essence Flight School trains under FAA Part 61, which lets your syllabus follow your schedule. That flexibility suits Venice students who juggle irregular work hours.
