Discovery Flight
From $229
About 60 minutes (90 and 120 minutes available)
Every flight flies the full route over Marina del Rey, so you can fly over your own harbor. Book for one, for two from $299 or in the Cirrus from $499, or give it as a gift.

From The Harbor To Van Nuys Airport (KVNY)
Every discovery flight from Essence Flight School flies the full route, and Marina del Rey is on it, so your first time at the controls includes your own harbor. The school is at Van Nuys Airport, about 21 miles up the 405.
Our discovery flight route has ten stops, and stop six is Marina del Rey. Every flight includes the full route, so the harbor is part of every booking. After the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and a turn around downtown, the route heads west and the city gives way to the main channel, the basins and the breakwater, with the open Pacific beyond. Instructors keep the airplane clear of LAX airspace to the south as you turn north along the coast toward the Santa Monica Pier.
From the air, Marina del Rey makes immediate sense. You see how the basins fan out from the main channel, how the Ballona Wetlands sit just to the south, and how close the arrivals into LAX really are. Students who live on a boat or near Fisherman's Village often say it is the first time they have seen the whole harbor at once.

One Loop From Van Nuys · KVNY
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Stop 01 Of 10Instructor Flying
Your instructor handles the takeoff from one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, then the controls are yours.

Stop 02 Of 10You’re Flying
First turns, first climb: the Valley spreads out below as you learn how little pressure it takes to bank the airplane.

Stop 03 Of 10You’re Flying
The sign on Mount Lee looks closer and bigger than you expect, with Griffith Observatory on the next ridge.

Stop 04 Of 10You’re Flying
The stadium bowl opens up below, with downtown rising just beyond it.

Stop 05 Of 10You’re Flying
The skyline comes up level with the windshield as you fly a smooth turn so everyone on board gets the view.

Stop 06 Of 10You’re Flying
The city gives way to the marina, the breakwaters and the open Pacific, staying clear of LAX airspace to the south.

Stop 07 Of 10You’re Flying
The pier, the beach and the whole curve of Santa Monica Bay: the photo everyone wants.

Stop 08 Of 10You’re Flying
Up the coast, the Santa Monica Mountains drop straight into the ocean.

Stop 09 Of 10You’re Flying
Back across the mountains toward the Valley, with canyons and ridgelines below and Van Nuys ahead.

Stop 10 Of 10Instructor Flying
Your instructor flies the approach and landing, then a short debrief on the ground and your flight time is logged.

Marina del Rey is often described as the largest man-made small-craft harbor in North America, and plenty of our students from here already handle a boat. That experience carries over to flying more than people expect. You already read charts, watch the weather and the wind, talk on a VHF radio, follow right-of-way rules and think ahead about where you will be in ten minutes.
Flying adds a third dimension and a faster pace, but the habits are the same. Boaters tend to pick up radio work and navigation quickly, and they rarely need convincing that a careful pre-departure check is worth the time. If you have spent weekends sailing out past the breakwater, you are closer to being a pilot than you might think.
Interactive Hangar
All 20 of our aircraft belong to Essence Flight School, every one, and they are maintained in-house. The fleet covers every stage of training: the Cessna 162 Skycatcher and Diamond DA20 for early lessons, the four-seat Piper Warrior, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the twin-engine Piper Seminole. Cockpits are set up consistently across the fleet, so moving between airplanes feels familiar rather than new.

By route planner, our school at 7900 Balboa Blvd is about 21.4 miles from Fisherman's Village, roughly 32 minutes with no traffic. Most drivers take Culver Boulevard or Washington to the 405, head north through the Sepulveda Pass and exit at Sherman Way, then go east to the airport. Some prefer Admiralty Way to Washington and Venice Boulevard before joining the freeway.
Nearly the whole drive is the 405, so the Sepulveda Pass sets your travel time. A mid-morning slot or a weekend lesson keeps the trip close to the no-traffic estimate. We fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, and students from the Silver Strand, the Golden Triangle and around Fisherman's Village often choose a standing weekly slot so the drive becomes routine.
Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator

The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is built into every Essence program. It banks and pitches like the airplane, so you can practice before your first time doing something for real, and go back between flights to work on whatever felt rough. On a coastal-cloud morning when the lesson plan changes, a simulator session keeps your training moving.
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, MCX time counts toward your certificates: up to 20 hours for the instrument rating, 50 hours for the commercial certificate, 25 hours for the airline transport pilot certificate and 2.5 hours for the private pilot certificate. It is on show at every free consultation, and you can also fly it for an hour in a $189 simulator discovery session.

Santa Monica Airport is about 5.1 miles from Fisherman's Village by route planner. On a map it looks like the obvious choice. The calendar is the problem: under the 2017 settlement between the City of Santa Monica and the FAA, the city may close the airport after December 31, 2028, and the settlement allowed the runway to be shortened to 3,500 feet.
If you start a private pilot certificate now, or a career track that runs past 2028, you want an airport that will still be there when you finish and when you want to rent afterward. Van Nuys has two parallel runways, 8,000 feet and 4,000 feet, and a control tower that operates from 6:00 AM to 10:45 PM daily. For most marina residents, the extra twenty minutes or so up the 405 is the more sensible long-term choice.

Your First Flight
Your instructor flies the takeoff from Van Nuys, and once you are clear of the field the controls are yours. You fly over the Valley, past the Hollywood Sign and Dodger Stadium, around downtown, then west to Marina del Rey, where the city gives way to the breakwaters and the open Pacific. From there you turn up the coast past the Santa Monica Pier and on to Malibu before crossing the mountains home. Every flight includes that full loop; the exact path on the day depends on weather and air traffic control. From $229 for one, $299 for two, $499 for the Luxury Cirrus.
Every flight includes the full route. Enroll within 24 hours of your flight and its full cost is credited toward your training.

Anyone who lives by the water knows the June gray that sits over the coast while the Valley bakes in sunshine. That pattern matters to pilots, and learning to read it is part of training here. On many mornings Van Nuys is clear while the coast is still under cloud, which means lessons often go ahead even when your balcony view says otherwise.
It also explains why so many coastal pilots go on to an instrument rating. With it, you can fly through a cloud layer on instruments rather than waiting for it to burn off. Our Instrument Rating course is $11,700, and up to 20 hours of it can be logged in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX simulator.
Questions about the drive from Marina del Rey, scheduling, prices or financing? A real person at Van Nuys answers, 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week.
Boaters already check the wind before leaving the slip, but pilots read it a little differently. On the water you care about wind strength and sea state over hours. In the air you care most about the wind at the moment of takeoff and landing, especially how much of it blows across the runway, and about how high the clouds are and how far you can see.
A breezy afternoon that makes for a great sail past the breakwater can be a demanding crosswind day at the airport, while a flat, foggy morning that keeps boats in the marina may be perfectly flyable once you climb above it with an instrument rating. Part of your training is learning to read aviation weather reports, called METARs and TAFs, and turning them into a clear go or no-go decision. Many marina students say it makes them better sailors too.

Marina del Rey residents book a lot of discovery flights as gifts and celebrations: birthdays, anniversaries and, more than once, proposals. The Discovery Flight for Two, from $299, lets one person fly while the other enjoys the view. The Luxury Discovery Flight, from $499, puts you in our Cirrus SR22 Turbo, with room to add a passenger from $599, and a sunset slot over the bay is hard to beat.
Every discovery flight can also be bought as a gift certificate, emailed right away, at the same price as booking it for yourself. And if the person who flies decides to enroll within 24 hours, the full cost is credited toward training.
Rent the same airplanes you train in. After a checkout flight with one of our instructors, licensed pilots rent from $179 an hour with fuel included. A sunset coastal flight in the Piper Warrior with friends aboard is a popular first trip. Rates for every airplane are on our aircraft rental page.

Most marina students start with one of three goals. Some want recreational flying in good weather, and the Sport Pilot License at $8,400 is the simplest route. Others want to take friends and family places, day or night, and choose the Private Pilot License, from $10,400. A smaller group wants a new career, and the Airline Pilot Program covers every rating from zero experience through all three instructor certificates in about nine months, for $84,000.
Airline Pilot Program graduates are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at Essence Flight School, $48,000 a year full time, while they build hours toward airline minimums. The planes they will eventually fly are the same ones they watch descending into LAX from the marina.
Essence Flight School has been training pilots at Van Nuys since 2007. We are a Part 61 school with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, a 100% safety record and a 4.9-star average from 600+ Google and Yelp reviews. More than 2,000 people have taken a discovery flight with us.
Our prices are fixed and published, with a lowest price guarantee on comparable training. Most courses need $2,500 down, after which you can spread the balance over an interest-free in-house plan or finance it long-term through Stratus Financial if you qualify.
