Follow Balboa Boulevard south from Northridge and it brings you to the door of Essence Flight School at Van Nuys Airport. CSUN students, Valley families and working adults train here in 20 airplanes the school owns outright, with a full-motion Redbird MCX simulator built into every program.
Some commutes need directions. This one barely does. Balboa Boulevard runs north to south through Northridge, and the school's address is 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3, on the edge of Van Nuys Airport. Reseda Boulevard and the 405 are good alternatives when Balboa is busy, but many Northridge students simply turn onto Balboa and drive until they see airplanes.
Northridge and the CSUN campus are roughly a quarter of an hour from the airport. That short trip changes how training feels. A lesson is not an all-day event that needs to be planned weeks ahead. It is something you can fit between a morning class and an afternoon shift, or before dinner on a weeknight.
Main route: south on Balboa Boulevard to Van Nuys Airport

Planning Flight Training Around A CSUN Semester
California State University, Northridge is one of the biggest campuses in the Cal State system, and many of its students work while they study. Flight training has to fit into that, not compete with it. Essence Flight School trains under FAA Part 61, so your syllabus follows your calendar. You can fly twice a week during a heavy semester, then step up the pace during winter or summer break.
A practical pattern for students: take ground school online during the semester, when your schedule is tight but evenings are free for reading, then use breaks for concentrated flying. The Redbird MCX simulator, built into every program, keeps procedures fresh during the weeks you cannot fly as often. Ground school prepares you fully for the FAA knowledge test, so passing the written exam can happen on your own timeline.
During The Semester
Two lessons a week, online ground school in the evenings, and simulator sessions to keep skills sharp between flights.
During Winter And Summer Breaks
Fly more often to push through big milestones like solo and cross-country, or finish a focused rating such as the 7-day multi-engine course.
After Graduation
Consider the Airline Pilot Program, nine months from zero experience to a professional certificate, if aviation becomes the career.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
None of the 20 airplanes is leased; Essence Flight School owns the entire fleet. The Cessna 162 and Diamond DA20 handle early training, the Piper Warrior carries most private and instrument training, the Piper Arrow adds complex-airplane experience, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo offers modern performance, and the Piper Seminole twin is used for multi-engine training. The cockpits are standardized across the fleet.

A Clear Budget For Student And Family Wallets
Cost is the first question most Northridge students ask, and the answer at Essence Flight School is published. Private pilot training comes in three packages, at $10,400, $15,400 and $22,000. For a lighter commitment, the Sport Pilot License costs $8,400. A discovery flight starts at $229. The school offers a lowest price guarantee, and short-term financing is available for those who prefer monthly payments.
Ground school is included, and the simulator is part of every program rather than a separate charge. That makes it much easier to plan a training budget around tuition, rent and work income, and to know where you stand before you commit.
A useful tip from the instructors: the biggest factor in total cost is consistency. Students who fly regularly spend less time reviewing old skills and more time learning new ones. If your budget only allows one lesson every two weeks, talk it through at a consultation, because a short pause and a concentrated block later can be cheaper than a slow trickle of lessons.

Every program Northridge students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
$229 (Luxury Cirrus $499 / $699 / $949)
About 1 hour (luxury 60, 90 or 120 minutes)
The lowest-pressure way for a CSUN student or Northridge family to test flying. You take the controls with an instructor beside you and see the Valley you live in from above.
Teen Aviation Course
From $4,200
Ages 10 to 15, flight and simulator time included
A fixed package for younger Northridge students who want real lessons with an FAA-certified instructor, close enough to home that a Saturday lesson takes the morning, not the whole day.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Fixed course, 25 hours of flight time
A budget-friendly license in the two-seat Cessna 162 for daytime flying with one passenger. A good fit for CSUN students who want to fly for fun on a student budget and keep the time commitment manageable.
Private Pilot License
$10,400 / $15,400 / $22,000
Commonly about 3 to 6 months at a steady pace
The main certificate for flying with passengers across the country. Northridge students often spread it across a semester, finish the big milestones during a break, and use the simulator to stay sharp in between.
Turbo Cirrus Program
Cirrus upgrade +$300/hr
Built around your goals
Learn to fly the Cirrus SR22 Turbo, the quickest airplane on the ramp. Popular with Northridge professionals and families who plan longer trips around California and the West and want to learn that airplane properly.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
Commonly about 6 to 8 weeks
The next step after the private license, and the one that makes flying practical for real travel. Part of the time can be logged in the Redbird MCX, which suits students fitting training around classes.
Commercial Pilot License
From $15,400
Set by your hours and schedule
Your license to earn money as a pilot. For CSUN graduates aiming at aviation careers, it is the bridge to instructing, charter and the other professional jobs that build experience.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated 7-day course
Seven days in the twin-engine Piper Seminole. Northridge students often complete it during winter or summer break, so a new rating goes in the logbook without disrupting a single class or a part-time work schedule.
Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII / MEI)
From $15,400
Set by your schedule
Teach other pilots and build hours while being paid. Living in Northridge, a straight drive down Balboa from the airport, makes a daily instructing schedule realistic and keeps your commute short.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
9 months, zero to professional certificate
The complete career path in nine months, with a guaranteed paid instructor position for graduates at $48,000 a year full-time. A focused option for recent CSUN graduates who are ready to commit.

For Northridge Families With A Future Pilot At Home
Northridge is a family neighborhood as much as a college town, with quiet streets of single-family homes stretching north toward Porter Ranch and Granada Hills. Many parents first come to Essence Flight School because a child has been talking about airplanes for years.
For younger kids there is the Teen Aviation Course: $4,200, ages 10 to 15, with genuine flight lessons and simulator sessions led by an FAA-certified instructor. Older teens can fly solo at 16, often before they have spent much time driving alone. A discovery flight is a good way to test the interest first, and parents are welcome to ask every question at a free consultation.
Parents often ask about safety first, and that is the right instinct. The school's 100% safety record, its school-owned and centrally maintained fleet and its one-on-one instruction are all things you can ask about in detail before your child ever leaves the ground.

Van Nuys Airport control tower and ramp with mountains behind
Learning At One Of The Busiest General Aviation Airports
Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world. It has two parallel runways, a control tower and a constant flow of business jets, helicopters, piston airplanes and training traffic. For a new pilot, that is an excellent classroom.
From day one, you will talk to the tower, follow instructions, and learn to keep a picture of the traffic around you. Students who learn here tend to feel comfortable at any airport they fly to later, because few places they visit will be busier than the one they trained at. And when you head out on a training flight, the Valley's open grid and the mountains around it make navigation landmarks easy to find.
Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
A Full-Motion Simulator Included In Every Program
Think of the Redbird MCX as part of the course, not a purchase. Every program includes it. The full-motion cockpit banks and pitches with your inputs, and CSUN students use it during midterms and finals weeks, when an hour in the sim keeps checklists and radio calls from fading until the next flight.

Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate

Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, MCX time counts toward your certificates: up to 20 hours for the instrument rating, 50 hours for the commercial certificate, 25 hours for the airline transport pilot certificate and 2.5 hours for the private pilot certificate. The free consultation includes a look at the MCX and at the Redbird TD2 desktop trainer.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
Every student pilot remembers the first solo. After weeks of lessons with an instructor, there comes a day when your instructor steps out, signs your logbook, and watches from the ground while you take the airplane around the pattern alone. It is usually only a few takeoffs and landings, and it is the moment training stops feeling like a class.
At Essence Flight School, you reach that point when your instructor is confident you are ready, not on a fixed calendar date. That is one of the benefits of Part 61 training. Northridge students who fly steadily and use the simulator between lessons tend to arrive at solo well prepared, and the tradition of celebrating it on the ramp is one you will not forget.
Everything We Fly, Teach And Charge, In One Brochure
Courses and exact pricing, the fleet, the full-motion simulator, financing options and how training works at Van Nuys, in a brochure you can read in five minutes and share with your family.
The school has been teaching at Van Nuys since 2007. Its scorecard: 4.9 stars on 600+ Google and Yelp reviews, 98% of students passing the checkride on the first attempt, and a 100% safety record without a single accident. More than 2,000 discovery flights have been flown from the school's ramp.
Every one of the 20 airplanes is owned by the school, which keeps maintenance and scheduling under one roof. The cockpits are set up in a standardized way, so moving from a trainer to a more advanced airplane feels like a logical next step.
Rent The Same Airplanes You Train In
Your relationship with the fleet continues after the checkride. Complete a checkout and you can rent the airplanes you trained in, from $179 an hour with fuel built in. The aircraft rental page covers the rest.

North Valley Winds And Why They Make You Better
Northridge residents know the dry, gusty Santa Ana winds that come through in fall and winter. They are a real factor in flying, and they are part of your education. Your instructor will teach you how to read wind forecasts, how to land with a crosswind, and when a day is simply better spent in the simulator or on ground study.
Learning in a place with varied conditions builds judgment. You will know how to handle a calm summer morning, a breezy afternoon and the occasional day when the right decision is to stay on the ground. Those are the decisions every pilot makes for life.
Some CSUN students already know they want to fly for a living. Others discover it after one lesson. Either way, the professional path is the same: private pilot, instrument rating, commercial certificate, multi-engine rating, flight instructor, then hours. Essence Flight School offers every step at one airport.
The Airline Pilot Program packages it all into nine months for $84,000, and graduates are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at the school, $48,000 a year full-time. Teaching at the school where you trained, a short drive from Northridge, is a straightforward way to build the hours the airlines require.
Northridge is also well placed for that life. Instructors who live nearby can teach early mornings and evenings without a long commute, and the business jets, charter operators and corporate flight departments based at Van Nuys give a young professional pilot a daily look at where a career can lead after the airline interview, or instead of it.
The consultation is free and easy to fit into a student schedule. Pick a time on the week planner, drive down Balboa, and spend it with an instructor. You will see the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and the airplanes, talk through costs and timelines, and leave with a written training plan.
If you want to feel the controls before deciding, book a discovery flight on the same day. Many people find it easier to plan once they have actually flown.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
Very close, roughly a quarter of an hour from Northridge and CSUN. Balboa Boulevard runs straight south from Northridge to the school at 7900 Balboa Blvd.
Can I Learn To Fly While I Am In College?
Yes. Part 61 training lets you set your own pace, so you can fly a couple of times a week during the semester and more during breaks. Ground school can be done online.
What Should A CSUN Student Budget For A License?
