West Hollywood runs on unusual hours, and so does Essence Flight School. We fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, at Van Nuys Airport, about 18 miles from West Hollywood City Hall. That leaves room for a midday lesson before a shift, a sunset flight after a shoot, or night training over the city lights.
Ask West Hollywood students why they picked us and schedule comes up almost every time. Our students here include restaurant and hospitality workers who are free in the late morning, designers and editors who work in bursts, performers who keep night hours and remote workers whose calendars change week to week. A school that only flies on weekday business hours does not work for most of them.
We are open from 9 AM until 9 PM every day, and scheduling is online at any hour. You can book a lesson at 1 AM after you get home, see which instructors and aircraft are open, and rearrange next week around a new call time. Many students settle into a fixed weekly slot, which turns the drive into a routine and keeps progress steady.

Your First Flight
Your Neighborhood, Seen From The Pilot's Seat
West Hollywood sits just south of the hills you cross on a typical discovery flight. Your instructor takes off from Van Nuys, then you take the controls over the Valley and fly toward the Hollywood Sign, with Griffith Observatory on the next ridge and the flats of West Hollywood and Mid-Wilshire spread out beyond. The route continues past Dodger Stadium and around downtown, then west to the coast. Sunset and evening slots are popular. Flights start at $229 for one, $299 for two and $499 for the Luxury flight in the Cirrus.

Every flight includes the full route. Enroll within 24 hours of your flight and its full cost is credited toward your training.

Through The Cahuenga Pass Or Over Laurel Canyon
By route planner, our school at 7900 Balboa Blvd in Van Nuys is about 17.9 miles from West Hollywood City Hall, roughly 29 minutes with no traffic. The usual route is Santa Monica Boulevard or Fountain Avenue east to Highland, onto the 101 through the Cahuenga Pass, west on the Ventura Freeway and off at Balboa Boulevard. When the 101 is jammed, Laurel Canyon over the hill to Ventura Boulevard is the local alternative.
The Cahuenga Pass is the slow point at weekday rush hour. Late-morning and early-afternoon lessons usually avoid the worst of it, which suits the West Hollywood students who work evenings anyway. Parking is easy at the school, and you check in at Suite D3.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Essence Flight School owns all 20 of its aircraft outright, with maintenance done in-house. You start in a light trainer such as the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, Diamond DA20 or Piper Warrior, then move up to the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the twin-engine Piper Seminole as you add ratings. The cockpit setup is standardized across the fleet, so each new airplane feels like a familiar step rather than a fresh start.
Tap an aircraft or use the arrow keys to switch. Rental rates are per hour, wet (fuel included), from our rate sheet.
Night Flying Over The City Lights
Night training is part of every private pilot certificate. The FAA requires night flight time with an instructor, including a night cross-country and night takeoffs and landings, and our late hours make it easy to fit in. For many West Hollywood students it ends up being the favorite part of training.
The Los Angeles basin at night is one of the most striking views in aviation: the grid of the flats, the dark outline of the Santa Monica Mountains, the glow of downtown and the airport beacons. Learning to read that picture, pick out airports and manage a cockpit in low light is a real skill, and doing it with your instructor until 9 PM means you can schedule it without staying up past midnight.
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Courses Offered
Every Course, One Fixed Price
Every program West Hollywood students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
From $229
About 60 minutes (90 and 120 minutes available)
Many West Hollywood students book a sunset slot and fly past the Hollywood Sign, which is just a few miles from home. You fly most of the hour, and enrolling within 24 hours credits the full cost.
Teen Flight Training (Ages 10–15)
From $4,200
Most teens finish over 4–8 months
A structured, all-in introduction to flying for younger family members, with ten flight hours, three simulator hours and one consistent instructor. Weekend and holiday lessons keep it simple for West Hollywood parents.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Built around 25 flight hours plus 3 simulator hours
For residents who want daytime recreational flying without the full private syllabus. It is the lowest-cost certificate we offer, taught in the two-seat Cessna 162 Skycatcher, and it can be upgraded later.
Private Pilot License
From $10,400 (Comprehensive $15,400, Premium $22,000)
Two to four months for most students
Includes the night training that West Hollywood students tend to love, flown over the city lights until 9 PM. Choose Comprehensive or Premium if your schedule calls for extra flight time.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
About 6–8 weeks
Lets you fly through the marine layer instead of waiting it out. Up to 20 hours in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX count toward the rating, which suits students fitting training around irregular work hours.
Commercial Pilot License
$15,400 package ($15,900 list)
A few months if you already hold private and instrument
The certificate that allows paid flying. The package covers airplane time, including the complex Piper Arrow, plus 20 hours in the full-motion simulator, all scheduled around a West Hollywood week that rarely looks the same twice.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated, about one week
A short, intense course in the Piper Seminole twin that fits between projects. Freelancers in West Hollywood often schedule it during a gap between jobs and finish in about a week.
Flight Instructor Program (CFI, CFII, MEI)
From $15,400
Four-week intensive course
Teaching suits people who like explaining things clearly. This four-week program covers all three instructor ratings and leads to paid work building hours, often with students from your own side of town.
For licensed pilots who want a fast, comfortable four-seat airplane with a parachute system. Earn the high-performance endorsement in our SR22 Turbo, then rent it for trips out of town.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
About 9 months, zero to professional certificates
For West Hollywood residents ready to make flying their profession. Every rating from zero experience at one fixed price, followed by a guaranteed paid instructor job at $48,000 a year full time while you build hours.

Santa Monica Airport Is Closer. Here Is Why Students Still Choose Van Nuys
Santa Monica Airport is about 7.9 miles from West Hollywood City Hall by route planner, which makes it the closest airfield on the map. But under the 2017 settlement between the City of Santa Monica and the FAA, the city may close the airport after December 31, 2028, and the runway was shortened to 3,500 feet.
A private pilot certificate takes months, and a career track takes a year or more. Many West Hollywood students prefer to start at an airport with a long-term future, where they can keep flying, renting and adding ratings for years. Van Nuys has two parallel runways, 8,000 and 4,000 feet, and a control tower that operates from 6:00 AM to 10:45 PM daily.

For Designers, Filmmakers And People Who Notice Things
West Hollywood has a lot of people who make things for a living, from the showrooms around the Pacific Design Center to the edit bays and studios scattered across the city. They often tell us the same thing after a first flight: they had never really seen the shape of Los Angeles before. From a few thousand feet the city resolves into patterns of boulevards, hills, reservoirs and coastline that you cannot see from the ground.
Flying also rewards the kind of attention creative work demands. You learn to scan, to prioritize, to make clear decisions under a little pressure and to communicate precisely over the radio. Several of our students say the discipline of the cockpit has carried over into how they run a set or manage a deadline.
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is part of every program, not an extra you pay to add. It banks and pitches like the airplane, so you can practice a maneuver the night before you fly it, rehearse an emergency safely or keep progress moving on a day when the weather does not cooperate. West Hollywood students with unpredictable weeks find it especially useful for staying sharp between flights.

Its FAA Letter of Authorization allows up to 20 hours toward an instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward a commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward a private pilot certificate. You can see it at a free consultation or book a one-hour simulator discovery session for $189.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
New students often ask what actually happens once they sign up. Training follows a clear pattern. Many students start with a discovery flight: a briefing, a walk-around of the airplane and an hour in which you fly most of the time. The early lessons cover straight-and-level flight, climbs, descents and turns, and you start making radio calls with Van Nuys tower under your instructor's guidance.
By lessons four and five you are working on slow flight, stalls and the traffic pattern, and spending time in the Redbird MCX to rehearse what you will fly next. Between flights you work through ground school at your own pace. Most students are surprised by how quickly the radio, which sounds like a foreign language on day one, starts to make sense.
How Fast Is Fast?
Flying two or three times a week, most students finish a private pilot certificate in two to four months. Flying once a week works too, but you spend more of each lesson reviewing the last one.
Choosing Your Instructor
You can fly with a few of our instructors early on and pick the teaching style that suits you, then keep that instructor through your checkride.

Most West Hollywood students start with one of two goals. The first is personal flying: a private pilot certificate that lets you take friends up for a sunset flight or fly yourself on a weekend trip. Our Private Pilot License starts at $10,400, and most students finish in two to four months flying two or three times a week.
The second is a career change. Our Airline Pilot Program covers every rating from zero experience through Commercial and all three instructor certificates in about nine months, for a fixed $84,000. Graduates are guaranteed a paid flight instructor position at Essence Flight School, $48,000 a year full time, while they build hours for the airlines.
After you are licensed, rent the same airplanes you trained in, from $179 an hour with fuel included, following a checkout flight with one of our instructors. A sunset flight with friends in the four-seat Piper Warrior is a popular first rental. The rental page lists current rates for each airplane.

Ground School That Works Around Your Week
Ground school is included with every course, in person at Van Nuys or online at your own pace. It covers everything the FAA tests on the knowledge exam: aerodynamics, regulations and airspace, weather, navigation and charts, aircraft systems and performance, human factors, and radio procedures. Before your written test you review one-on-one with an instructor.
For students who study best late at night, online ground school is a natural fit. Enrolled students also get free access to the Redbird TD2 desktop trainer at the school for practicing flows and instrument scans before or after a lesson.
Since 2007, Essence Flight School has been teaching people to fly out of Van Nuys. We are a Part 61 school with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, a 100% safety record and a 4.9-star rating across 600+ Google and Yelp reviews. Our instructors have flown more than 2,000 discovery flights.
Course prices are fixed and published and carry a lowest price guarantee on comparable training. Most courses begin with $2,500 down, and you can pay the rest through an interest-free in-house plan or finance it through Stratus Financial for qualified applicants.
Our free consultation is thirty minutes, one-on-one and in person. You tour the school, walk out to the airplanes, see the Redbird MCX simulator and meet instructors. Then we build a plan around your goal and your real schedule, with exact pricing. Use the week planner on this page to book a slot that suits your hours, including evenings and weekends.

Do I Need Experience To Start?
No. Every lesson is one-on-one with an FAA-certified instructor who starts from the beginning. Most students begin with a discovery flight and are flying the airplane themselves that day.
Is Ground School Included?
Yes. Ground school is included with every course, in person at Van Nuys or online, and covers everything on the FAA knowledge test.
What Does A Private Pilot License Cost At Essence?
