Flight School Near Porter Ranch, Below The Santa Susana Mountains
From the hillside streets of Porter Ranch you can see the whole San Fernando Valley laid out to the south. Essence Flight School teaches you to fly over it, from Van Nuys Airport, in 20 airplanes the school owns, with a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator built into every program.
Porter Ranch sits high on the northern rim of the Valley, tucked against the Santa Susana Mountains. Step outside on a clear evening and the whole basin spreads out below: the street grid, the lights of Ventura Boulevard in the distance, the Santa Monica Mountains on the far side, and small airplanes tracing slow lines across it all.
That view is a preview of flying. From the cockpit, the Valley looks almost exactly the way it does from the top of Porter Ranch, except that you are moving through it and choosing where to go. Many residents spend years watching those airplanes before deciding to find out what it feels like at the controls. Essence Flight School, at Van Nuys Airport, is where that question gets answered.

Down The Hill To Van Nuys Airport
From Porter Ranch, the airport is a drive south across the north Valley. Many students take the 118 east to the 405 south and exit toward the airport. Others stay on surface streets and head straight down Reseda Boulevard, Balboa Boulevard or Lindley Avenue, especially when the freeways are crowded. Pull into the on-site parking at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Suite D3.
On a normal day the drive runs about eighteen minutes. That is close enough to fly before work, after school pickup or on a weekend morning, and the school is open 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, so you can choose the times when the drive is easiest.

Porter Ranch families tend to plan ahead, and aviation rewards that. The milestones are set by the FAA and are easy to map onto a teenager's school years. The Teen Aviation Course, a fixed $4,200 package for ages 10 to 15, introduces real flight lessons and simulator time with an FAA-certified instructor. At 16, a student pilot can fly solo. At 17, a private pilot license is possible.
For a student considering an aviation career, that early start can matter. A teen who finishes high school with a private pilot license, or well on the way to one, has a serious head start on the instrument rating, the commercial certificate and the rest of the professional path. And even for students who choose a different career, the discipline of flight training carries over into everything else.
Ages 10 To 15
The Teen Aviation Course: real lessons and simulator hours with an instructor, $4,200 all-in.
Age 16
First solo, a milestone many students reach before they are comfortable driving the 118 alone.
Age 17 And Beyond
Private pilot checkride, then instrument, commercial and the Airline Pilot Program for those who want a career.

Questions Porter Ranch Parents Should Ask Any Flight School
Choosing where a teenager learns to fly deserves the same care as choosing a school or a surgeon. Before you commit anywhere, it is worth asking a few direct questions, and Essence Flight School is happy to answer every one of them at a free consultation.
Here is what we suggest asking, along with our answers, so you can compare.
Who owns the airplanes? At Essence Flight School, the school owns all 20, so maintenance and standards stay under its own control.
What is the safety record? A 100% safety record with zero accidents.
How do students perform on checkrides? A 98% first-time checkride pass rate.
Is instruction one-on-one? Yes, every lesson is one-on-one with an FAA-certified instructor.
What does it cost, in total? Every program has a published price, with a lowest price guarantee and financing available.
Can we see the operation first? Yes. Book a free consultation to see the airplanes and the Redbird MCX simulator.

Flying For Busy Professionals
Many Porter Ranch residents run businesses, manage teams or work in healthcare, technology and finance. Their calendars are full, and they want training that respects that. Essence Flight School trains under FAA Part 61, so the syllabus follows your schedule: two or three lessons a week when work allows, fewer when it does not, and more during a quiet month.
The Redbird MCX simulator, part of every program, keeps progress moving during the busy weeks. Ground school can be done online, at home, in the evenings. And because the school is open seven days a week until 9 PM, there is usually a slot that fits.
Some Porter Ranch professionals also use flying as a deliberate break from screens and meetings. An hour in the cockpit demands total attention, which is exactly why so many students say they come back from a lesson more refreshed than from a day off.
Porter Ranch students train in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator throughout every program; it is included, not optional. Families like that it lets a teenager or a busy parent rehearse each lesson before the airplane leaves the ground and replay mistakes afterward. The cockpit banks and pitches like the real airplane, at any airport and in any weather.
Practice procedures before you fly them
Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate
Brief and debrief the same scenario on the screen
FAA approval means the MCX hours are logged. Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, MCX time counts toward your certificates: up to 20 hours for the instrument rating, 50 hours for the commercial certificate, 25 hours for the airline transport pilot certificate and 2.5 hours for the private pilot certificate. Bring the family to a free consultation to see the MCX and the Redbird TD2 desktop trainer.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
Ask a Porter Ranch pilot why they learned and the answer is often about family. A private pilot license turns a long Saturday drive into a short flight. The Central Coast, Santa Barbara, the desert resorts and the mountain airports of the Eastern Sierra are all realistic destinations for a well-planned trip from Van Nuys.
The Cirrus SR22 Turbo, available through the school's Turbo Cirrus program, is especially popular for this kind of flying. It is fast, comfortable and modern, and training in it from the start means you are ready to use it for real travel. An instrument rating, $11,700, adds the ability to fly through clouds and keeps more family trips on schedule.
Everything We Fly, Teach And Charge, In One Brochure
Courses and exact pricing, the fleet, the full-motion simulator, financing options and how training works at Van Nuys, in a brochure you can read in five minutes and share with your family.
Some new pilots assume they will need to buy an airplane. Most do not. Here, a checked-out pilot can rent the very airplanes used in training, from $179 an hour, fuel included. There is no hangar to pay for, no annual inspection to schedule and no insurance policy to manage.
Because the school owns all 20 of its airplanes and maintains them under its own control, the fleet you rent is the fleet you already know. The cockpits are standardized, so stepping into a different airplane of the same type feels familiar.
Flying the family to the Eastern Sierra or the Central Coast is a great goal, and learning to plan it is part of your training. A cross-country flight starts days ahead with a look at the weather pattern, then a route that accounts for mountains, airspace and fuel stops. On the morning of the trip, you get an official weather briefing, check the airplane's performance for the day's temperature and altitude, and file or brief your plan.
Your instructor teaches you every step of that process during private pilot training, on real cross-country flights to other airports. By the time you pass the checkride, you have done it several times with supervision and on your own.
Mountain destinations add lessons of their own: higher airport elevations, stronger winds and more careful fuel planning. The habits you build on training flights out of Van Nuys are the same ones that make a trip to the mountains with your family relaxed rather than stressful.
After the checkride and a checkout, Porter Ranch pilots rent the same airplanes they trained in, from $179 an hour with fuel included, no ownership costs attached. The aircraft rental page explains the process.

When Flying Becomes A Career
For Porter Ranch students who want to fly professionally, the Airline Pilot Program takes you from zero experience to a professional certificate in nine months for $84,000. It combines private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and flight instructor training into one plan.
Each graduate is guaranteed a paid instructor job at the school, $48,000 a year full-time, the usual way new professionals log the hours airlines expect. Short-term financing is available.
For a Porter Ranch graduate, that can mean living at home through training and the instructor years, saving on rent while building a professional career. An instructor can walk you through the month-by-month timeline at a free consultation.
Founded in 2007, the school has earned 4.9 stars from 600+ reviewers on Google and Yelp. Its students pass their first checkride 98% of the time, it has never had an accident, and it has flown more than 2,000 discovery flights.
Course prices are posted for anyone to see and backed by a lowest price guarantee. Ground school, in the classroom or online, is part of the package.
Choose a time on the week planner and drive down the hill to Van Nuys Airport. An instructor will show you the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and the airplanes, explain each program and put together a written plan with timelines and costs. There is no charge and no obligation.
Families are welcome to come together, and you can add a discovery flight to the same visit.
