Pasadena is a city of scientists, engineers, artists and planners, and many of them eventually want to understand flight from the inside. Essence Flight School is at Van Nuys Airport, about 25 miles west by the 134 and 101, with 20 school-owned aircraft, an FAA-approved full-motion simulator and every rating under one roof.
Few places have as much aerospace curiosity per square mile as Pasadena. Caltech sits a short walk from the Playhouse District, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is tucked into the Arroyo Seco at the foot of the San Gabriels. People here design spacecraft, model atmospheres and write the software that runs instruments. A surprising number of them have never flown a small airplane, and when they finally do, they usually ask very good questions.
We also train Pasadena students who are nowhere near a lab: ArtCenter designers, teachers, healthcare workers, small-business owners in Old Pasadena and retirees in Bungalow Heaven. What they share is a preference for understanding why things work, which suits flight training well. The theory is real, the numbers matter, and the payoff is a skill you can use for the rest of your life.

Your First Flight
What A Pasadena Student Sees On A Discovery Flight
Your instructor flies the takeoff from Van Nuys and hands you the controls once you are clear of the field. The typical route heads east past the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory to Dodger Stadium and downtown, the part of the flight that points toward home. On a clear day the San Gabriel Mountains rise beyond the basin to the northeast, the same range that frames every Pasadena street. The route then turns west toward the coast before returning over the Santa Monica Mountains. Weather and ATC decide the exact path on the day. From $229 for one and $299 for two.
First turns over the San Fernando Valley, with Burbank and Glendale to the east
The Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and Griffith Observatory on the next ridge
Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine, with the San Gabriel Mountains beyond on clear days
A smooth turn around the downtown Los Angeles towers
Marina del Rey and the Santa Monica Pier, then the Malibu coastline
Every flight includes the full route. Enroll within 24 hours of your flight and its full cost is credited toward your training.

Colorado Boulevard To Balboa Boulevard
By route planner, our school at 7900 Balboa Blvd is about 24.6 miles from Pasadena City Hall, roughly 33 minutes with no traffic. It is a straight freeway run: Colorado Boulevard or the 210 to the 134 west through Eagle Rock, Glendale and Burbank, where it merges into the 101 near North Hollywood, then off at Balboa Boulevard and north to the airport.
The 134 and the 134/101 interchange are the pinch points. Morning and midday lessons usually move much faster than late-afternoon ones, and weekends are open too, since we fly 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. Students from Old Pasadena, Bungalow Heaven and Playhouse Village often book a standing slot so the drive becomes routine.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Essence Flight School owns all 20 of its aircraft, every single one, and maintains them in-house. That means the airplane you booked is the airplane you fly. The fleet spans the light-sport Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20, the four-seat Piper Warrior, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the twin-engine Piper Seminole. Cockpits are standardized across the fleet, so the instrument layout you learn early carries over as you step up.
Tap an aircraft or use the arrow keys to switch. Rental rates are per hour, wet (fuel included), from our rate sheet.
You Will Drive Past Burbank. You Will Learn To Fly Beside It
On the way to every lesson you pass Hollywood Burbank Airport, where airliners come and go all day. Van Nuys sits right next to Burbank's Class C airspace, so learning to work alongside it is part of training here. From your first flight you talk with the Van Nuys tower, and as you progress you learn how to request services from Southern California approach controllers, how airspace boundaries shape your route and how to fit smoothly into busy traffic.
For a Pasadena student who likes to understand systems, this is one of the most rewarding parts of training. The airspace around Los Angeles is a carefully designed structure of shelves, corridors and frequencies, and learning to read it on a chart and then fly through it is a little like seeing the source code behind the sky.
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Closer Airports And Why Pasadena Students Still Choose Van Nuys
San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte is the closest airfield to Pasadena, about 11.4 miles from City Hall by route planner, and Whiteman Airport in Pacoima is another field on the north side of the Valley. Van Nuys is a longer drive than El Monte, and we would not claim otherwise.
Students who make the trip west usually do it for the scale of what is at the end. Van Nuys is a towered airport with two parallel runways, 8,000 and 4,000 feet, and a control tower that runs from 6:00 AM to 10:45 PM daily. Essence Flight School adds 20 aircraft that we own outright, six aircraft types from a light-sport trainer to a twin, an FAA-approved Redbird MCX plus a Redbird TD2 and the full ladder of ratings from day one through the airline track.

Hot Afternoons And Why Pilots Care About Density Altitude
Pasadena summers are warm, and the San Fernando Valley can be warmer. For pilots, heat is more than discomfort. Hot air is less dense, so an airplane needs more runway to take off and climbs more slowly on a hot day. Pilots call this density altitude, and learning to calculate and respect it is a core part of training in inland Southern California.
This is exactly the kind of subject Pasadena students enjoy. Your instructor will show you how to use performance charts to predict takeoff distance and climb rate, why early-morning flights feel crisper in August, and how the same reasoning applies at mountain airports. It is applied physics with an immediate, practical result.
Redbird MCX Full-Motion Simulator
Full-Motion Practice, Built Into Every Program
The Redbird MCX full-motion simulator is part of every course at Essence Flight School, never an add-on. It banks and pitches with your inputs, so you can rehearse a lesson before you fly it, rerun a scenario as many times as you like and practice failures that would be unsafe to try in the air. For Pasadena students who like to test, measure and repeat, it is often a favorite part of training.
Practice procedures before you fly them
Keep training in the MCX when the weather will not cooperate
Brief and debrief the same scenario on the screen
The MCX's FAA Letter of Authorization credits up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating, up to 50 hours toward the commercial certificate, up to 25 hours toward the airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate and up to 2.5 hours toward the private pilot certificate. You will see it at a free consultation, or you can book a one-hour simulator discovery session for $189.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
The Instrument Rating: Where Theory Meets The Cockpit
Many of our science-minded students find the instrument rating the most satisfying stage of their training. It teaches you to fly by reference to instruments alone, to follow published procedures with precision and to manage a cockpit when there is nothing to see outside but cloud. Our Instrument Rating course is $11,700.
Much of the early work happens in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator, where you can repeat an approach until it is clean and pause to analyze exactly what happened. Up to 20 hours in the MCX count toward the rating under its FAA Letter of Authorization. Then you take that precision into the airplane and fly real approaches in the busy Los Angeles system.
Everything We Fly, Teach And Charge, In One Brochure
Courses and exact pricing, the fleet, the full-motion simulator, financing options and how training works at Van Nuys, in a brochure you can read in five minutes and share with your family.
Researchers, clinicians and founders rarely have empty calendars, so it helps to know what each stage really asks of you. At two or three lessons a week, most students finish a private pilot certificate in two to four months. The instrument rating usually takes about six to eight weeks after that, and the multi-engine rating is an accelerated course of roughly a week.
Momentum matters more than speed. Students who keep a steady rhythm, even just two mornings a week, spend less time re-learning and more time progressing, and they usually finish sooner and for less than students who fly in bursts. If a conference, a grant deadline or a launch window takes over your month, tell us early and we will adjust the plan, then use the simulator to get you back up to speed when you return.
Rent the same airplanes you train in. Once you are licensed and have flown a checkout with one of our instructors, rental starts from $179 an hour with fuel included. Every airplane and rate is listed on our aircraft rental page.

Study Tools For People Who Like To Read The Manual
Every course comes with ground school, taught in our Van Nuys classroom or online whenever it suits you. It covers aerodynamics, regulations, airspace, weather, navigation, aircraft systems and performance, and prepares you for the FAA knowledge test, with a one-on-one review with an instructor before you sit it.
The free Essence app adds study guides and courses. The Multi-Engine course in the app, for example, is a 274-page study guide in 16 chapters with more than 200 diagrams, a 10-question quiz per chapter and a 50-question final exam, and it saves your place as you go. Enrolled students can also practice flows and instrument scans on our Redbird TD2 desktop trainer at the school.
Essence Flight School opened at Van Nuys in 2007 and has trained pilots there ever since. We are a Part 61 school with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, a 100% safety record and an average of 4.9 stars from 600+ Google and Yelp reviews. Over 2,000 discovery flights have left our ramp.
Course prices are fixed and published, with a lowest price guarantee on comparable training. Financing starts at $2,500 down, with an interest-free in-house payment plan or long-term options through Stratus Financial for qualified applicants.
Pasadena students tend to arrive with a list, and we like that. The consultation is free and gives you thirty minutes with us, face to face. You tour the school, walk out to the airplanes, see the Redbird MCX simulator, meet instructors and get straight answers about hours, costs and timelines. You walk out with a written plan and the exact cost. Book it on the week planner on this page; a midday slot keeps the 134 calm.
Ready to work toward a pilot certificate? Lesson One is a two-hour training lesson at Van Nuys: ground school, your own preflight, about 70 minutes of flying and a debrief, logged as dual instruction.
By route planner, about 24.6 miles from Pasadena City Hall, roughly 33 minutes with no traffic. The usual route is the 134 west through Glendale and Burbank onto the 101, then Balboa Boulevard north.
What Is The Best Time To Drive From Pasadena?
The 134 and the 134/101 interchange are the busy points. Morning and midday lessons usually move faster than late-afternoon ones, and weekend slots are available too.
Is There An Airport Closer To Pasadena?
Yes. San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte is closer, about 11.4 miles from City Hall. Students who choose Van Nuys usually do so for the towered airport, the fleet of 20 school-owned aircraft and the simulators.
Do I Need A Science Background To Learn To Fly?
No. Ground school starts from the basics and covers everything on the FAA knowledge test. A curious mind helps, but no technical background is required.
What Is Density Altitude?
It is a way of describing how air density affects airplane performance. On hot days the air is thinner, so takeoffs are longer and climbs are slower. You learn to calculate it with performance charts during training.
Does Simulator Time Count Toward My Rating?
Yes, within limits. Our Redbird MCX is FAA-approved, and under its Letter of Authorization you can log up to 20 hours toward the instrument rating, among other credits.
What Are The Private Pilot Package Prices?
From $10,400 for the Standard package, $15,400 for Comprehensive and $22,000 for Premium. Financing starts at $2,500 down.
