Westlake Village To Van Nuys Airport · One Freeway, No Pass
Flight School Near Westlake Village
From Westlake Village it is the 101 almost the whole way to Essence Flight School at Van Nuys Airport: about 21 miles from City Hall, with no canyon or mountain pass in between. That simple drive is why Westlake students keep some of the most consistent lesson schedules we see, and consistency is what turns students into pilots.
By route planner, our school at 7900 Balboa Blvd is about 21.3 miles from Westlake Village City Hall, roughly 29 minutes with no traffic. The usual route is Agoura Road to the 101, east through Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills, then north on Balboa Boulevard. There is no Sepulveda Pass and no Cahuenga Pass to gamble on, which is more than most of our students can say.
Eastbound traffic does build on weekday mornings, so late-morning and afternoon lessons are the easiest drive. Students from First Neighborhood, Three Springs and Westlake Island often book a standing weekly slot. Predictable travel means predictable lessons, and predictable lessons are the single biggest factor in how quickly someone finishes a certificate.

The Full Route Over Los Angeles
There is nothing to pick. Every discovery flight flies the same loop: the Valley, the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and downtown, the coast from Marina del Rey to Malibu, then home over the mountains. Your instructor takes off and lands; you fly 50–80% of it.

Courses Offered
Every Course, One Fixed Price
Every program Westlake Village students can take at Van Nuys, with the price on our site. Filter by goal and tick up to three courses to compare them side by side.
Discovery Flight
From $229
About 60 minutes (90 and 120 minutes available)
The easiest way to test the idea. Book online, drive the 101 at the hour you would train and fly most of the hour yourself. Every flight includes the Malibu coast, just over the hills from Westlake.
Teen Flight Training (Ages 10–15)
From $4,200
Most teens finish over 4–8 months
A good gift from Westlake grandparents and parents alike: ten flight hours, three simulator hours and the same instructor every time, at one all-in price, scheduled around school and holidays.
Sport Pilot License
From $8,400
Built around 25 flight hours plus 3 simulator hours
Our most popular choice for Westlake residents who want to fly for pleasure. Daylight flying with one passenger, often with a driver's license instead of an FAA medical, and every hour counts toward a private later.
Private Pilot License
From $10,400 (Comprehensive $15,400, Premium $22,000)
Two to four months for most students
For residents who want to take family along and fly at night or out of state. Westlake's easy commute makes the two-or-three-lessons-a-week pace simple to keep, which shortens the overall timeline.
Instrument Rating
From $11,700
About 6–8 weeks
Valuable for anyone planning real trips, since coastal low clouds can sit over destinations even when Westlake is sunny. Up to 20 hours in our FAA-approved Redbird MCX count toward the rating.
Commercial Pilot License
$15,400 package ($15,900 list)
A few months if you already hold private and instrument
For Westlake pilots who want to fly to a professional standard or explore part-time paid flying after a first career. The package includes complex Piper Arrow time and 20 hours in the full-motion simulator.
Multi-Engine Rating
From $5,100
Accelerated, about one week
A fixed-price week in the Piper Seminole twin. Experienced Westlake pilots often add it simply for the challenge and the extra margin that a second engine brings to their flying knowledge.
Flight Instructor Program (CFI, CFII, MEI)
From $15,400
Four-week intensive course
Some retirees discover they love teaching. This four-week program covers all three instructor ratings, and it is equally the standard next step for younger pilots building toward an airline career.
For Westlake pilots who want comfort and speed for longer trips. The parachute-equipped SR22 Turbo is the airplane many of them have in mind, and you can train in it and then rent it.
Airline Pilot Program
From $84,000
About 9 months, zero to professional certificates
For Westlake students starting a flying career: every rating at one fixed price in about nine months, then a guaranteed paid instructor job at $48,000 a year full time while building airline hours.

Westlake Lake, Lake Sherwood And The View West
Westlake students have a bonus most of our students do not. Training flights that head west out of Van Nuys reach the Santa Monica Mountains within minutes, and from there the familiar shapes of home come into view: the oval of Westlake Lake with its island neighborhood, Lake Sherwood tucked against the hills, and the open country of Malibu Creek State Park running south toward the coast.
Recognizing those landmarks from the air is more than a nice moment. It is how pilots learn to navigate by sight. A student who can find the 101, the lakes and the Las Virgenes corridor from a few thousand feet is building the same skill used on every cross-country flight, and it tends to stick when the landmarks are your own.

Meet The Fleet: 20 Airplanes, All School-Owned
Our fleet is 20 aircraft, and Essence Flight School owns every one of them outright, with in-house maintenance. The range covers the light-sport Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Diamond DA20, the four-seat Piper Warrior, the complex Piper Arrow, the Cirrus SR22 Turbo and the Piper Seminole twin. Cockpit setups are standardized, so moving from one airplane to the next feels familiar.

Is Camarillo Closer? Only Slightly
Camarillo Airport is the other airfield with flight training near Westlake Village. By route planner it is about 19.3 miles from Westlake Village City Hall, while Van Nuys is about 21.3 miles. That is a difference of roughly two miles, so distance does not decide much here.
What usually decides it is the training itself. At Van Nuys you get a towered airport with two parallel runways, 8,000 and 4,000 feet, and a control tower that runs from 6:00 AM to 10:45 PM daily. At Essence Flight School you add 20 school-owned aircraft, an FAA-approved full-motion simulator, and every rating from sport pilot to the airline track at one school. Visit both if you are unsure. Most people know which one fits after a single morning.
Every program at Essence Flight School includes time in the Redbird MCX full-motion simulator. It banks and pitches like the airplane, so you practice a lesson before you fly it and smooth out rough spots between flights. Westlake students who learn later in life often say the simulator is where things click: you can pause, ask a question and try again without the clock running on an airplane.

The MCX is an FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device. Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, MCX time counts toward your certificates: up to 20 hours for the instrument rating, 50 hours for the commercial certificate, 25 hours for the airline transport pilot certificate and 2.5 hours for the private pilot certificate. You can see it during your consultation or fly it for an hour in a $189 simulator discovery session.
Hours That Count Toward
Up To 20 Hours14 CFR 61.65
Under its FAA Letter of Authorization, up to 20 of the 40 instrument hours can be flown in the Redbird MCX.
Some of our most dedicated students from Westlake Village are not starting careers. They are finishing them. Executives who have just stepped back, business owners who finally hired a general manager, and parents whose children have left home often tell us that learning to fly was on their list for decades.
Pilot certificates have no maximum age. What counts is meeting the medical standard for the certificate you choose, and for many recreational pilots the sport pilot route keeps that simple, since it can be flown with a valid U.S. driver's license instead of an FAA medical certificate, as long as your most recent medical application was not denied. We will walk you through the options at a free consultation, and if a medical question comes up, we will point you to an aviation medical examiner before you spend money on training.

Your First Flight
A Discovery Flight That Ends Near Home
Your instructor flies the takeoff from Van Nuys, then hands you the controls. The route passes the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium and the downtown towers, then turns west along the coast past Marina del Rey and the Santa Monica Pier. From there you continue up the Malibu coastline, where the Santa Monica Mountains drop into the Pacific, before crossing the ridges back toward the Valley. Every flight includes that full loop, and weather and air traffic control set the final path. Prices start at $229 for one flyer and $299 for a pair.

Sport Pilot: Flying For The Pleasure Of It
The Sport Pilot License is our most popular choice for Westlake residents who want to fly purely for enjoyment. The course is a fixed $8,400 and is built around 25 hours of flight time in our light-sport Cessna 162 Skycatchers plus 3 hours in the Redbird MCX, with ground school included. It lets you fly in daylight, in good weather, with one passenger, which is exactly how most recreational flying happens anyway.
Under the FAA's newer MOSAIC rules, sport pilots can also fly a wider range of airplanes than before. And if you later decide you want night flying or more passengers, the hours you log count toward a private pilot certificate, so nothing is wasted.

For Westlake Village residents who picture flying somewhere, the Private Pilot License is the better fit. It allows passengers, night flying and travel anywhere in the country, and it is the foundation for an instrument rating later. Our course starts at $10,400, with Comprehensive at $15,400 and Premium at $22,000 for more flight time. Most students finish in two to four months.
After the checkride, you can rent the same airplanes you trained in. The four-seat Piper Warrior is a natural first choice for a trip with family, and pilots who add the high-performance endorsement often move up to our Cirrus SR22 Turbo.

What A Typical Training Week Looks Like From Westlake
A common rhythm for our Westlake students is a weekday late-morning lesson, when the 101 eastbound has cleared, plus a weekend morning flight. Each visit runs about two to three hours door to door at the airport: a briefing with your instructor, the flight itself, and a debrief where you review what went well and what to work on next. Some weeks one of those visits is a session in the Redbird MCX instead.
Between visits, you study at home with online ground school, and you can review your logged hours and signed instruction tickets in the Essence app. Keeping to two lessons a week is what moves most students from day one to a checkride in two to four months. Miss a week for travel and nothing is lost; your instructor simply picks up where you left off.

Rent The Same Airplanes You Train In
Rent the same airplanes you train in. Once you are licensed and have completed a checkout flight with one of our instructors, rental starts from $179 an hour with fuel included. See our aircraft rental page for every airplane and rate.

Two People, One Airplane
A surprising number of Westlake students come to us as a pair. One partner books a discovery flight, the other sits in the back for the view, and a month later both are enrolled. Our Discovery Flight for Two, from $299, is built for exactly that: one of you flies while the other takes in the scenery, and you can switch the conversation to training plans over lunch afterward.
Couples who train together tend to finish together. They study for the knowledge test side by side, quiz each other on airspace, and book back-to-back lessons so one drive covers both.
Essence Flight School has been at Van Nuys Airport since 2007. We are a Part 61 school with full-time, FAA-certified instructors, a 98% first-time checkride pass rate, a 100% safety record and an average of 4.9 stars from more than 600 Google and Yelp reviewers. We own every one of our 20 airplanes and maintain them in-house.
Pricing is fixed, published and backed by a lowest price guarantee on comparable training. Financing begins at $2,500 down, with an interest-free in-house plan or longer-term options through Stratus Financial for qualified applicants.
The best way to decide is to come and look. Our free consultation is a thirty-minute, one-on-one visit: you walk the ramp, see the Redbird MCX simulator, meet instructors and talk through whether sport, private or something more ambitious suits you. You leave with a written plan and exact pricing. Pick a time on the week planner on this page; a late-morning slot gives you the easy version of the 101.
